What a view, what a drive in the rain
Sep 2019 • Friends
Driving for 7 hours to reach the Santiago de Compostela from San Sebastián, we had one day of poor weather over the entire month long trip. So here we were in the chilly altitude and broken clouds, with occasional spits of rain. The road itself was good, not much traffic, gas stations were few and far between. I filled up on green 98 three times, just to make sure I did not run out and also for rest breaks and some food. The scenes of the mountains was spectacular, clouds at their peaks, others clear. All very green from the rain and previous days of drizzle. I planned this drive to be during daylight hours. I do not believe I would want to try it at night. I wish we might have had the time to stay a few days, maybe on the next trip to Spain.

Beautiful, well maintained National Park
Sep 2019
If you are in Northern Spain do not miss this place. Make sure you can tolerate altitude and can walk, hike, breathe in the clear mountain air! We parked in parking lot 4 and caught a bus into the national park. Very convenient and then hiked 12 miles in 1/2 day around two lakes. There are 6,000 heads of cattle and large herds of goats as well roaming free during the warm seasons...and a lot of cow dung everywhere. But also cowbells creating a magical symphony!

Stunning - not to be missed

We parked at the car park at the bottom and took the special public bus, which also enables you to stop off at the Basilica.

I'm glad I'm not a bus driver having to contend with narrow, winding roads, but also other vehicles, cyclists, sheep, goats, and cows.

There are amazing views as the bus drives up - make sure you sit on the same side of the bus on the way down, in order to see the views on the other side.

Once at the car park at the top, there is a further brisk walk up to the two lakes. The views are just amazing, with snow still at the top of the mountains and the cows are quite inquisitive - watch out for their large presents on the footpath!

This was definitely a highlight of my trip to Asturias.

How does one review gorgeous mountains?
May 2019 • Friends
Don't visit Picos de Europa! There's nothing to see here!

Only a few hours from Madrid, Picos de Europa is a stunning place. The mountains are beautiful. The hikes are fantastic. We stayed overnight at one of the refugios (Vegarredonda) within the park and had a great time. Watching the clouds roll in--below me--from the Atlantic was amazing. I would have loved to have spent days exploring this place, but unfortunately, our trip was cut short by rain (and late spring snow, per the forecast). I want to come back!

But don't visit!

Stunning

Living in the Lake District I see the beautiful sights of the fells every day but cani say this area of Spain is simply stunning. With amazing roads and access the sights are breathtaking. We done this trip in my wife's sports car and the roof down all the way through this area and further on down to southern Spain. Lots of bikes and very easy to navigate with a right hand drive vehicle. Loved every minute.

THIS IS SPAIN???
Apr 2019 • Family
What a great experience. We had no idea that Spain had majestic mountains like the Picos. We stayed nearby in Arenasde Caberales and hired tour guide Fernando Abarquero Zorrilla to help with our hike in the Picos. His knowledge of the history, geology, flora and fauna was amazing.

Wow what a national park! So beautiful, we hiked the amazing Ruta del Cares whilst staying in Posada de Valdeon in our motorhome. We will definitely be visiting and exploring more in the future!

Riding the cable car
Apr 2019 • Couples
This mountain range, with its snowy craggy peaks, is a gem. We drove from Potes, about twelve miles, to ride the cable car. It was a wonderful experience as a fresh snowfall occurred over the weekend. We arrived about ten. We did not have to wait. Up on the mountain is a warming house, gift shop, and rental business for those who want to snowshoe or ski cross-country. We had a wonderful time. A great family activity. I recommend highly, if you are in Spain.

Beautiful scenery.

The long drive up to the park on the steep narrow roads can be a bit scary for the driver and passengers but worth it for the scenery. My wife and I did not hike - we only did a little exploring at the top of the road near the restaurant before heading back down.

Superb walking country
Sep 2018
If memory s correct these mountains are about the same area as the Lake District but go up to 8,500'. There are more bears in the Picos than in the whole Pyrenees. Been here several times and while the towns and villages are more developed than they were when I first came here 30 years ago the mountains are still pristine. Sad they now have a funicular to Bulnes, I walked there several times, the first time I arrived they were slaughtering a goat in the bar (there was one of those silences when we walked in) but we deserved the beer we had and the ice was broken. Cannot recommend this place highly enough to anyone interested in the outdoors, just one thing, take more water than you think you might need. Also, there can still be deep snow higher up in June, so be prepared to alter your routes.
