Perhaps it was the rainy, cloudy foggy day. But the walk up to Puna Pau did not deliver much of value. It is the source of the red "sombreros" worn by the moais, and there are a couple large wheels carved out of the rocks....More

Here is where the moai "hats" were quarried and carved. There is not too much left to see, although there is a nice view over the city and down to the sea.

What Rano Raraku was for the Moai, Puna Pau was for the Pukao. The red scoria was retrieved from the volcano , carved on site and then transported to be placed on top of the Moai throughout Rapa Nui. There are currently approximately 25-26 Pukao...More

This is the quarry where the locals would carve the headdress of the most important moïas. There is not much to see and the quarry has dissappeared almost entirely because of the vegetation. Not worth a lot of time. Much more to see.

We used the hotel local guide to take us here, well worth making the trip and part of the heritage of the island

It's where the top knot of the moabs are made. It's a quarry with red sandstone. You see samples in the bottom, if you hike up, you will see the actual quarry. It's not a big place, so 20 minutes maximum is sufficient.

This is the place to learn about the making of the topknots that are found on top of the heads. This is the quarry where they were made and you can see ones in various stages of development.

Quite interesting to see where the red volcanic top knots where made, easy walk up to the site, not too far from Hanga Roa
