Beautiful location and grounds. Very pleasant to walk around especially on a beautiful day. Very well maintained.
After a walk enjoy lunch at the restaurant or just a beer made there.
Small store were you can purchase goods made by the abbey ( wine, beer, honey...)

Worth a detour, recently refurrbished, very relaxing few hours
Aug 2019 • Friends
The abbey and church in the village have both been recently refurbished, the interior of the abbey is not full of relics, clean lines and quite unusual. Pater Stephen is the only resident monk, but there is a very strong group who look after the place. The trout farm is also available to purchase fish and trout in the restaurant just outside the abbey is an excellent value lunch.

There are a couple of walks, the shorter one takes you 30 minutes and covers the diversion in the river which allows the water wheel to be used in the abbey. Many years ago there were iron works on the river itself, but these are long gone.

Enjoyable couple of hours

The Abbey and grounds are lovely a peaceful haven. Had lunch in the restaurant on Easter Sunday, although it was busy I can't fault the service or food, it was excellent.

I read a news article the the abbey closed last year but from the visit a couple of hours ago it seems open. I wrote the first review in 2014 and continue to visit yearly for a quiet rest and contemplation. The abbey is beautiful but be sure to stop by the Gnadekappelle (Grace chapel) immediately to the right of the main church doors, which is much quieter. There is also an interesting wooden carving of a pieta scene of which I don’t know and cannot find the provenance.

Interesting visit to abbey Himmerod
Aug 2018
In the middle of nowhere abbey Himmerod is situated with a huge cathedral inclusive a huge organ. Top orgnist from all over the world are invited to give inspiring concerts. Due to the long acoustics the music which is played is more served by romantic works than baroque, because only expierenced auditors can recognize the pieces in th mix of tunes. Outside the cathedral nice shops are located such as a bookshop, stuff for tourists, local teas, a backery and drinks produced by the munks. A nice restaurant too is available and makes a visit more then valuable. ,

What a place
Aug 2018
This must have been a great place in the old days. Unfortunately you can see that it’s not that well kept any longer since the monastery closed down. It’s still nice to visit if you are anyway in the neighborhood
