Really interesting archeological site. Approximately 20 underground tombs that can be visited, each with an individual entrance. Be prepared to deal with some steps (about 20 per tomb) in relatively humid conditions.

This is an open area where many burial tombs have been found. They are left in situ and they have entrances from above ground to glass windows where you can view the first chambers of each of the tombs. It's very interesting. Unfortunately being roughly...More

This Etruscan necropolis was built before the Romans existed, who in fact copied many things about Etruscans to adopted them into their own culture. The wall paintings are absolutely out of this world in detail and skill. The Tombs would have been filled with lavish...More

The Etruscan necropolis of Tarquinia, or the Necropolis of Monterozzi, is the most interesting in situ collection of Etruscan art. The Etrusan culture still being a mystery the burial chambers frescoes present a unique opening into the life of this ancient people. Scenes of hunting...More

We loved our stay in Tarquinia, a historic walled city, which is off the main tourist path, making it a true Italian experience. The Etruscan tombs are very interesting and amazing when you see them. We thought they were somewhat difficult to find by foot,...More

We had always wanted to get to Tarquinia, and decided that the time had finally come. We hired a wonderful guide, Sonia Tavoletta, who arranged a driver as the site is not otherwise easy to access. We went to Cerveteri first, where we toured tombs...More

The necropolis of Tarquinia is THE key site for Etruscan tomb paintings. Off the usual tourist trail, but undoubtedly one of Italy's greatest treasures. Highly recommended. (One practical note, though: plenty of stairs to go down and up visiting the tombs ...)

We visited the Etruscan necropolis open to the public as you approach Tarquinia from the south east, parking for free in the shade of the trees on the side of the main road (SP43 Via Ripagretta) nearby. Entry was €6 each (cash only) with an...More

Well worth a visit, parking on the road...hot on a hot day and quite humid. The steps can be steep and take care with the last step as can be higher, or lower, than you expect. Worth checking them all out, they are not that...More

We took a taxi and arranged for the driver to collect us some hours later. You need to do this as there are no taxis in Tarquinia. On weekdays there is a regular bus service.

Have not been to Ostia so cannot compare. We really did enjoy Tarquinia. They have self guided tours. It is quite extensive and there is a lot of going up and down stairs to see the individual graves. It sits on a hill top... More
