This fortified farmhouse was erected in the middle of the ninth century and it looked like a tower-house whose facilities served to shelter agricultural commodities. The Castle of La Rancia was enlarged in the fourteenth century by order of Rudolph II dof Varano and it was also used as a residence. The keep , about 25 meters high, is divided into six flooers connected by a spiral staircase. In the ealry fifteen century, Braccio da Montone, a distinguished leader from Perugia, arrived in the Marca to fight against Ludovico Migliorati, Lord of Fermo, and took up quarters in the castle. In the 1430s and 1440s Francesco Sforza, his wife and part of his army were accomomodated in the castle, where Niccolo Piccinio signs a peace treaty in 1442 in the service of the Pope. One of the most important dates to remember are 2 and 3 of May 1815 when all around the castle was the scene of a raging battle between the French army of Gioacchino Murat, king of Naples and Napoleon's brother-in-law, and the Austrian troops of General Federico Bianchi.

There was a loggia area where the wedding was held - a great spot! Didn't see much else other than the courtyard and some of the archaeological exhibits - but those were interesting. The castle is in a lovely rural area just outside of Tolentino...More

We were on the autostrada and saw this small castle. There was one other couple there so we were generally able to wander about undisturbed. It was a great find, easy to access and well worth the admission.

The castle is quite interesting, nice and has been totally restructured. This could be negative but the works have been done respecting styles and architerctural characteristics and everything is kept in very good conditions.

The castle is interesting in its reconstruction. It is good to be able to see areas that were used as cellars and stables etc even though it is not furnished. You can also go to the top of one of the towers. The museum pieces...More

This wonderfully restored/preserved fortress is easy to access from the highway beside which it stands. As noted by other reviewers, much of the facility is empty and thus somewhat disappointing. Other rooms do contain some displays but there was very little English so we found...More
