Held annually on July 20th, the Okunitama Shrine Plum Matsuri originated when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and son Minamoto no Yoshiie visited the shrine and offered plums to the gods in appreciation for their victory in battle. A plum market was then set up in the shrine. During the festival, visitors are given paper fans and folding fans with a picture of a crow to pray for abundant harvests and to ward off illness and misfortune. By waving the fan, you can get rid of agricultural pests and make a sick person well. By hanging the fan in your home's entrance, you can exorcise evil spirits and bring in happiness. The shrine's main path is lined with many stalls selling plums.
