It was an impromptu plan to visit the zoo during our last visit to Melaka.
We were there on a Friday and it was somewhat crowded. Since it was a long walk, we decided to take the Buggy ride which is RM60 for a 6 seater. The wait was long but definitely worth it. We had a tour guide who explained about the animals during the tour.
The elephant feeding was really enjoyable. I would say that the highlight of the trip to the zoo was the elephant feeding. We didn't manage to catch the shows or Tiger feeding.
Just wanted to point out that at the Safari Walk, the distance between the giraffe and the passers by seems to be very close. There is even a sign in Malay that says we should aware since the giraffes bite. I think more safety precautions should be taken by the zoo authorities to ensure that the visitors are within safe distance from the animals. There are also monkeys roaming the zoo unattended which may also cause havoc for the visitors.
Small kids would enjoy the trip to this zoo. It is also a good learning experience for them.

I was at Melaka Zoo & Night Safari lately and boy, have they changed, heard that its privatised and therefore this change is really a welcome. We were greeted by the colorful Macaws at the 1st point of entry and was then the photography section. As it was a hot day, we took the tram to go 1 round then started to walk thereafter. The animals on display has grown to many types as I was there 10 years ago and it is really different now. We were informed that this year is their 50th year and will be celebrating with a much activities planned up soon for the upcoming school holidays. One highlight of the trip was the Bird Show which is a must-watch, unfortunately we were not able to proceed with the Night Safari but would go back there one day. This Zoo is advocating Recreation, Education & Conservation through its many programs planned up. Is happy that Melaka Zoo s up to par with its immediate counterparts worldwide. Keep it up!

Zoo Melaka is such a great place to visit with kids. The journey inside the zoo is so big, better prepare you stroller. Got all kinds of animals. It is safe no worries at all.

Wow, where do I start? Okay, the zoo does look tired and worn down. There is simply not enough sponsorship or support from the locals and tourists. A lot of people think its easy to maintain, just hire some foreigners and keep the weeds down. Boy have you ever tried managing a small company? Its definitely costs a fortune to maintain and feed the animals and staffing. I don’t think there is any return from investing in Zoo other than into expanding the knowledge of the peoples and building family relationships. I have not seen a zoo that does not have its glory days and it falls both in the uk and international. Even Zoo Negara, Taiping Zoo, Mines, Desa waterpark etc... all struggleand have to depend on volunteers.
This is my opinion about the Melaka Zoo, it is quite well stocked with game animals, there are bears, giraffe, tapirs, elephants, rhino, lion, tiger, etcs... pretty well stock compare to other european zoo. Please don’t compare to zoo in central new york that get paid billions yearly or london ZLS that run on Pound Sterling. If you do then the entrance to their zoo is 5x-10x the entrance price of Melaka Zoo and add in the food costs, would normally set you back £200 (RM1,600) for family of 4. Will you pay that much to support your local zoo or rather spend on multi million Starbucks? (Now you know why the zoo lacks funding, no supports)
The zoo itself is of a decent size. You can easily spend 2 hours at least here or more if you’re like me try to catch a glimpse of everything. There are plenty of rest rooms, shops and rest area. Seems like a well planned zoo ahead of its time but simply too costly to maintain. Good tram service available. Staffs looks happy so the management must be doing something right.
I recon to visit during the busy season as then the shops and all facility will be open. Even shopping centre struggles and close shops during low peak season.
If you do visit, try to join or walk with the local Malay family! The bigger the family the better! They are the best, fun and simply hilarious! They know many stories, their wifes action are simply gorgeous and funny, and simply down to earth. You know when their children say stuffs like “macam rumah hantu” and their mom shoosh them etc... absolutely funny! Saying like “Air tenang jangan disangka tiada buaya”... brings back memories during the primary school days. There is huge crocodiles in the crocodile enclosure 20feet?. Pretty scary!
Next to it is a prestegious multi million golf resort, yes it looks amazing, membership prob starts at RM(thousands) a year! Equivalent to 100 adult tickets/ year. Wonder if the golf resort willing to merge and shares funding to boosts both place. Then again if you are rich why would you support locals right? Hmmmmm....
The animals some are happy and some are not at their best, the enclosures are a bit run down, some are empty and some are under renovation. To bring the place to pristine would need at least a couple of million ringgit of state funding and constant supply of tourist. The trees planted are amazing and mature with lots of character. There is so much potential on this zoo.
Some places have quite a lot of mosquitoes such as the tapir and porcupine enclosure due to the wet requirement of the animal habitat. Then again the rest are quite mosquitoe free.
This zoo is built to educate, built for families to share times together.... without education, without funding.... everything will be lost. Everyone too busy watching National Geographic and Discovery Channel with flashy graphics or spending time in designer outlets but missed out on “the real adventure is out there”.
Management probably got fedup maintaining it. Initially build with good cause in the 70’s, later human starts comparing with other international newer multi billion dollars modern zoo and bad word spread, less people turn up, funding stops and sooner or later gone down the drain. The usual of human nature, ever wonder how much work and money it take to maintain your own garden or fruit farm?
Having said so, I still think it is worth a visit, not the best, have its ups and down, cheap ticket RM25 adult or RM15 senior citizen or RM35 for foreigner and eating (compare to European zoos). Overall probably maximum cost about RM200 for family of 4 (£45!!!) I wish it all the best and hope more funding will come your way.

Despite the smallness of the zoo, my kids and I enjoy the shaded walk around the zoo. If you manage your expectation better, you may be in for a surprise! Compared to KL Zoo I find the animals in Melaka Zoo more active and healthier (please do not compare with Singapore Zoo which has sponsors with deeper pockets).
If the weather is nice, its a nice stroll in-the park which can take anywhere between 1 hour or less.

The zoo is large with a lot of animals. Check the time table with the zoo for animal show or feeding time. As the area is very big, make sure your attire is proper for the visit. Wear walking shoes, a sweat shirt or anything comfortable.

Poor animals! We got there on March 27 at 10:00. The place is big therefore a lot of walking is required. We opted fopwa buggy rental 45min-100rm… very expensive…
We saw 90%of animals in just 30min and sadly, most of them were hiding due to the heat…
We had a hard time finding water for sale on the zoo's premises.

Basically Nite and Day Zoo are the same location just that some animal are nocturnal and some are active at night.
I went to Night Safari first so I am reviewing it first.
Nite Safari:
They will took u to a tram ride and briefly explain what animals were in the closure area. Need a lot of imagination skill cause you can really see anything and the tram was going on a high speed, with fuel smoke everywhere.
the announcer/tour guide is not that helpful and the information was not that much or even precised.
You will be dropped at certain places for closer viewing and other guide will give you some information on diff animals inside.
One thing for sure you can really see whether the guide is knowledgeable or just for the sake of being there to guide you so that you won't wonder off the course. Only two male guides that were really enthusiastic explaining to us and to the the joyful kids on some animal particularly the cross breeding amongst two big cats there. ( I salute him for that, a very thorough info indeed). Came to the alligator closure, the other guide only said there are 5 alligators in here. (that was all info he had, not even entertaining a question from a crowd).
Bird show (nite) was ok but it was too short and so little action.
Overall
Pro:
Ample parking at nite.
Nice jungle feeling.
If u were lucky u ll get a good, fun and knowledgeable guide.
Can see big animals that usually sleep during days
Cons.
Guides were not really helpful.
The smell of fuel( don't sit up to front)
Path to walk were poorly lit and maintain (accident waiting to happen)
What can be done?
Hire professional and competence guide
Mark pathway with soft lighting or even glo in the dark ink (i ve seen this in a zoo somewhere)

hi . Can i know until what time the zoo will be opened everyday ? And if we come on the night , will it be a normal zoo tour like we all walk around or just night safari is available ? tq .
Written 1 September 2016
As I know it is 9 am to 6 pm and during the weekend it is extended from 8 pm to 11 pm. Take note that Night Safari is not everyday but generally only on Fridays and Saturdays and sometimes on the even of public holidays/school holidays.
My suggestion is that you check and confirm the Night Safari is open on the date you are planning to go.
Though I have not been there myself, from what I heard from my friends and relatives, during Night Safari you can walk around freely. However do take note that the Zoo is huge. I also heard that the Night Safari is not worth the visit and not that interesting.
When I visited the Zoo recently I felt it not as well maintained or impressive as was during my previous visit 5 or 6 years ago.
