Travel time from Heraklion by bus is about 90 minutes each way, and there are only about 4 buses per day, so you need to allow about 5 hours to visit. The bus stop is just a few minute's walk from the entrance. Phaistos is...More

Not as fascinating as Knossos, but still quite interesting. One problem is that there isn't as much explanation as you might like, so I think it would be better with a guide (we didn't have one). But there are some beautiful artifacts scattered around the...More

This is so much more beautiful as Knossos: here you can use your own fantasy and it looks more real. Also, it is not so crowded and well signed out.

This is more representative of a Minoan site than Knossos since it has not suffered Evans' attention. The views of the Messara valley are simply wonderful. The site retains much of the early Minoan palace, which is still being excavated, and so much can be...More

Since it is in a remote location, it was not as overrun with tour groups as Knossos. The buildings are well signposted in Greek and English and the commentary is very good. Be sure to take water and wear comfortable shoes. There is not much...More

My visit to Phaistos was a wonderful experience. The site is very accessible with many ancient objects on display. Thankfully the archeological site has not been modernized as is Knossos, so walking the grounds is an experience in history. Also, Phaestos is much less touristed,...More

The Palace is a bit off the beaten track but well-worth the journey. The site is amazing with stupendous views. having seen Knossos first helped in interpreting the site which has some useful signage but not a great deal. The place is beautiful and atmospheric....More

Really enjoyed and I think it's one of key sites to see when in Crete. Well put together with a beautiful cafe. Just note that the drive up there, like everywhere in Crete, is a little scary

8 euro entry fee and I believe the ancient ruins are better than the Palace of Knososis. Magnificent 360degree views of the surrounding countryside from the palace. Cafeteria, toilets and free internet. Interesting but not as complete as the Middle East, and mainland Greece.

Everyone wants to go to Knossos, which is a bit of a mixed blessing; it makes Knossos unbearably crowded, but it makes Phaistos so much nicer by comparison. It was also excavated much better and has more limited and...let's call it "imaginative"... reconstructions than Knossos...More

Hi. We will be staying in Herakleon. So how far is Phaistos from there? Is there transportation to and from? or if a car rental is easier, is it possible to rent for a day? any recommendations. Sorry for the many questions, I am trying to plan my time there. Thank you

Hire a car but be ready for some exciting cretan driving and definitely buy the double ticket and go to Agia Triada as well. Deserted most of the time and stunning.
