The photo does not justify the buildings. There is a reason why the UN recognize their significance. The villages are well-preserved, especially the Zili Village and Men Yuan. You will feel so calm and pleasant walking around those villages. Even better if you are interested in history and culture. Each of the building (Diaolou) in fact, represents the hardship and... To give you context about my comments below, I'm a westerner who has been working and living in China for over 3 years. I speak just enough Chinese to survive here (meaning embarrassingly little). My wife and I reasonably well-traveled in China, so we were happy to see a less known attraction in China. We visited the Diaolou villages over... More

Set amidst rolling paddy fields, the fortified diaolous dwarf over ancient low rise village buildings. This area, about an hour's drive south west of Jiangmen is so underrated. Its UNESCO protected status covers 4 separate villages - ZiLiCun, MaJiangLong, JinJiangLi and SanMenLi. You can purchase entry tickets separately at each village entrance, or purchase a cheaper combo ticket that gives... More

after 1976, entire china changing to new generation.there is someting still there as before .文革使中国更统一也使文化没有了差别,而开平一直保留了新和旧的物事和或东或西的文化,如祭祖,如开平话,如木鱼,如清砖房,如碉楼,如房门壁画。如火蒜...

You might have heard about Chinatown in some Western country or in America, but maybe you haven't heard about Western town in China. Then Kaiping Diaolou is the place where has many western style building and these buildings were built about 100 years ago. One of the main reason that makes these buildings interesting is those buildings are will defended... More

A fascinating day trip from Guanghzou to immerse yourself in a history not often celebrated by the Chinese Govt nor from the Americas where many of these Kaiping Emigres departed to. Half of the magic of this place is imagining the lives of Chinese immigrants in America in the 1800's. What they saw and experienced at the dawn of America,... More

The marketing success has been awesome by Kaiping! Thousands of people around China come here to see the Daiolou and brings business to the area. There is nothing special to see. The buildings aren't that interesting at all. The 2 hour ride from Guangzhou definitely NOT worth it. I came here because I was already in Kaiping and need to... More

I've seen a lot in China, but this place is remembered its special atmosphere. And if you have a free day in Guangzhou, you will not regret, if you spend it in Kaiping. From Guangzhou bus goes for about two hours. Come not to the end station. Ask the driver "Kaiping"! If you do not see the free taxi at... More
