The Santuario is located underground and is a beautiful underground grotto. I believe that it is handicap accessible, but we took the stairs, and it was was well worth the effort, as there are beautiful frescos that have been, and are being restored on the walls as you descend. The Sanctuary is a marvel carved into the stone, and a... More

Descend into history where pilgrims walked to touch and sense a place purported to have experienced sightings of the Archangels. Whatever you believe or don't, this experience is worth the steps into a time forgotten. ( a lift is available - ask). Entering a cave that is home to relics and altars from the Middle Ages, one finds a quiet... More

We aren't religious, so this wasn't a pilgrimage, but it's still an interesting historical building underground that incorporates the sacred cave. We were surprised to find it a much easier walk down (and back up) a large staircase, compared to the description in some other reviews here. The museums on site have limited opening, so check before visiting if that's... More

It's unique blend of beauty, history, and architecture place San Michele in my personal top ten travel experiences. Descent into the grotto church is steep and arduous, not for the impaired. The reward is a place of worship and succor that ingrains the devotion to religion as a refuge from peril. It is a challenge to leave our present materialistic... More

On entering at ground level you progress down a long flight of steps, seeming to go back in time. Finally after a decent of some three floors there is a short flight of steps up into The Sanctuary, and it is wonderful. The cave, for that is what it once must have been, exudes an aura of peace and tranquility.... More

Beautiful and rare complex in a beautiful town. Definitely a must see if you are visiting the Gargano area. The drive to Mone Sant'Angelo from the Mattinata side is also very beautiful with some great views of the coastline.

We visited Santuario during a mesa. It was very impressive with a cave full of people singing in unison. Be prepared to walk a lot of stairs up and down. They had a small elevator with long lines.
