The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

The Dune du Pilat is Europe's largest wandering Dune and when you see the surrounding slowly (I am talking decades) drowning in sand it is impressive. The views from this dune are magnificent. The Bassin du Arcachon, a huge lagoon, can be overviewed completely from...More

Incredible place, difficult to tell a story about. A 100m mount of sand between a forest and the ocean, moving slowly due to the water and the wind. Not easy to climb it, but the view from the top worth every painful step. No more...More

We stayed in nearby Biscarosse and the dune was recommended to us. Parking was 4euro for 4 hrs. Don't need anymore time than this. The dune is massive in height and length and you can walk across its spine with great views over Archachon Bay....More

About 15 minutes up depending how fit you are. Dune ridge is about 2.5km long so allow at least 45 mins to get to the end. Only do this if you want to. Great views can be had only 5 minutes from the top. Take some water... More
