The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

Folks in SE France often make a special pilgrimage to this very unique place. I would estimate that the dune height is around 8 stories. If you approach from the inland side, you will find ample paid parking. A path of perhaps 100 meters takes...More

Trying to climb the dune from the steep back side is quite difficult. We found it much easier to use the stairs and run downhill. If time permits, walk along the ridge all the way to the highest point. It is much quieter there and...More

Hughe amount of sand to climb. It has steps to go to up more easily. Expensive parking located around 15 minutes by foot.

This is a tourist attraction the likes of which you are unlikely to see too often and so is very worthwhile. A natural wonder on the French Atlantic coast, it towers into the sky flanked by the ocean on one side and a thick pine...More

We really enjoyed the Dune - we had a week nearby, and walked over it twice every day on the way to beach, most days having it pretty much to ourselves! The sunset viewed from the top is pretty good as well. During high season,...More

1. Dune is free... parking is not. We were on a bus tour so we were 19 people. There were tons of campers there and it seemed like a perfect place to take kids. 2. It is windy at the top : pack a sandwich...More

Easy parking with various cafes shops on site . We paid €4 for about an hour. Steps take you to the top then glide through the sand on the way down!

Arriving here you park your car under a maze of trees, great to keep the car a little cooler in the heat, then take a walk to the little commercial area which has improved significantly since my last visit over 15 years ago. There are...More

About 15 minutes up depending how fit you are. Dune ridge is about 2.5km long so allow at least 45 mins to get to the end. Only do this if you want to. Great views can be had only 5 minutes from the top. Take some water... More
