Volcano trip

Not easy to get on the top, but definitely worth the climb! The view is amazing. Also the volcanic desert at the base of the volcano is interesting/bizarre

There was not that much to do in Oshima, so we decided to go for a hike one day. It was a gorgeous hike that was not difficult. The view was beautiful, you can see Mt Fiji from a distance. It can get pretty windy though. Remember to bring water and some snacks! There are a few tables you can... More

If you are curious, you should visit Tourist Center (http://www.hachijo.gr.jp/). Tour guide takes you to this place, otherwise, it's pretty difficult.. He was saying they have 1 bilingual tour guide! There are lots of old trees, moss, etc and you can find lots of pot holes in the forest. When I visited, weather was pretty bad because of typhoon, but... More

If you visit Oshima, then hiking to Mt. Mihara is an awesome experience. Its an easy hike. And you can reach the crater of the inactive volcano very easily. You can also cycle to somewhere around the top as well. There's a hot spring (bath) is available in the mountain.

If you are on Oshima, I highly recommend this walk to the top of the active volcano Mihara. It's an easy ascent, with impressive views into the crater. The route from the final bus stop is most popular, but there are several ways up, and you can also walk down by a different course than you take up. The route... More

We had a great time taking the gradual climb from the back of the Oshima Onsen hotel. Even our five year old could manage with only a reasonable amount of cookies and coaxing. It's quite a lesson in geology, but the island has set up the experience very well.
