Whilst out for a drive yesterday evening we decided to pay a visit to the St. Fillan's Old Parish Church ruin.
We accessed it, initially by taking the B945 road which leads from St Michaels to Tayport. A good distance along this road, and before entering Tayport, there is a small unclassified road off to the left. Taking this road for a short distance will bring you to the ruin. It is situated on the left hand side. There is a grassed driveway which leads to the gates of the Old Parish Church.
Much of the ruin is fenced off for safety reasons due to its state, and a danger of falling masonry. However, it is possible to walk around the perimeter of the fencing and there are plenty of good photographic opportunities.
There has been a church on the site since at least 1188, when it was granted along with the surrounding estate to the Priory of St Andrews by Alan de Lasceles.
The ruins which are seen today appear to have been a replacement for the first church on the site. It started life as a rectangular structure typical of a Scottish medieval church and was probably built some time in the years around 1300.
This older structure was added to, probably somewhere around the 1560's, when the north aisle was linked to the rest of the church by an arch.
The church fell out of use in 1841, and this was largely due to its inconvenient location.
The arch still remains today and is the most impressive feature of the ruin.
The surrounding churchyard also has a number of interesting gravestones.
In a very peaceful location, and well worth a visit if this sort of thing is of interest.
