Not one of the major chateau, but significant historically and a great way to spend a few hours. But best of all, we had the place to ourselves - yes, no one else was there. We enjoyed the house, they turned the organ on for us, and we stayed in the gardens enjoying a peaceful afternoon. Unlike many place, the... More

Fascinating location of the marriage of the Duke of Windsor to Wallis Warfield in 1937. Shows how the superrich could live in the 1930s. The automatic, self-playing Skinner organ almost worth the trip itself. Don't miss the grave of Slipper, her Cairn terrier, "the intended principal guest" at the wedding, died a few weeks before.

We loved this chateau so much that we are torn about telling you how wonderfully tranquil it is to avoid the hordes descending, yet it deserves more attention. It is the setting for an event which changed the whole course of the British Monarchy which was the primary attraction for us. Once we got there, we found it so relaxing,... More

To be honest, as a married couple, we visited this place for one reason only, and that is the Edward and Wallis story. We are in our late sixties and so have childhood memories of our mothers' take on what had happened to the monarchy at that time. I also remember the coffin carrying the Duke arriving in England and... More

Hello Wendy Florence S, It seems that you enjoyed your visit here and we are glad to read it in your comment. All the staff is doing his best to create a vivid atmosphere in the rooms and we truly appreciate the fact that you liked the special display around the "royal" couple (newspaper, copy of the wedding dress,...). You... More

Fabulous to visit on a sunny afternoon and chill out in the beautiful garden on the thoughtfully placed deck chairs. The kids loved the swinging chairs! Once we roused ourselves after our picnic, the house itself was very interesting with the Edward and Mrs Simpson connection. Thoroughly recommended.

Edward VIII abdicated and became the Duke of Windsor in order to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Le Chateau de Cande (near Monts) is where they got married. The chateau is full of their memorabilia, and set in wonderful grounds, ideal for a picnic. This attraction is relatively new and is constantly being improved. It is perhaps best to... More

Very interesting but you get kicked out at 12.30, it closes for lunch. There is a lovely small restaurant where you can eat. The grounds are interesting to walk round. Wallis Simpson and The Duke of Windsor livd here and many of the rooms have their belongings in them

This is not one of the main stream Châteaux, but has a certain charm and has not been open to the public for long. It has the added attraction of being the location of the wedding of the former King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, with Wallis Simpson. The guide was very informative and the grounds, as well as... More

Not a grand chateau like some of the others but well done, interesting - at the moment there's a special exhibition of mechanical/electrical musical curiosities from the 1920's - 30's - on until October - which added an experiential interest to the trip. We were disappointed to find there's nowhere to buy a coffee unless you like your coffee black,... More

The Domaine de Candé is definitely not one of the great Loire chateaux but it is a fascinating backdrop for comparatively recent history, especially for English visitors. Its primary claim to fame is that it was the place in which the Duke of Windsor married Wallace Simpson in 1937 after abdicating the British throne. It was then the home of... More
