Boasting the most impressively complete and unaltered set of monastic cloister buildings in England. Standing roofed and two storeys high, they include the gatehouse, the 15h century refectory with its glorious angel rood; unusual painted chamberand the floor of an earlier refectory. An exhibition and touch screen virtual tour tell the story of abbey life and a story bag is an ideal way for families to explore the site. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Unfortunately went here on a cold showery day. There was some inside, which was interesting, but a bit sterile, I would have liked to see refectory tables - eating implements & more about how the monks lived - but interesting all the same. The grounds,...More

If you are in Somerset and near this Abbey it is worth a visit. Although most of the Abbey is just a skeleton of the original place it is interesting to see what is left and how the place has been used. It is worth...More

Beautiful setting. Very peaceful. Very interesting. The only downfall was no cafe/tearoom - only a machine in the shop.

There weren't many people around when we arrived, so the custodian told us that we could take our dogs in - can you imagine the NT being so sensible? The remains of the abbey are remarkably complete (especially the monk's dormitory) & the medieval tiled...More

One of English Heritage's better offers. Plenty to see, although some of the features (notably the dormitory roof) are not original. Worth calling in to marvel at in situ heraldic tiles from the thirteenth century. Remarkable survivors. In common with many monastic foundations, atmospheric Cleeve...More

A beautiful and serene site with an amazing collection of complete buildings, including the Great Hall which was breathtaking. Good explanatory boards and a welcome from the volunteer on site. Well behaved dogs are also welcomed and ours enjoyed the peaceful surroundings.

If you are interested in the architecture and history of the abbey I would suggest probably 45 - 60 minutes inside and maybe 30 - 45 minutes walking around the exterior and looking in the shop. Cleve Abbey is not a large... More
