Overview
More
Dalwhinnie Distillery is a VisitScotland five star attraction and the home to a famous Highland Single Malt Whisky renowned for its gentle flavours accentuated with notes of heather honey, citrus, vanilla and sweet malt. The site of the distillery was chosen for its access to clear spring water and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs. Set in splendid mountain scenery at the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, Dalwhinnie is the highest distillery in Scotland at 1164 feet above sea level. The name Dalwhinnie is derived from the Gaelic language, meaning ‘meeting place’, referring to the meeting of ancient cattle drovers' routes through the mountains. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the distillery (Dalwhinnie has been awarded “Best Distillery Tour 2017” by Drinks International so it’s always best to book ahead) - the tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and offers visitors a detailed explanation of the traditional art of malt whisky distilling. At the conclusion of the tour each adult is offered a complimentary dram of whisky with a matching handmade chocolate, a souvenir tasting glass, and a discount voucher which can be redeemed in the distillery shop. The whisky and chocolate matching theme is carried forward with the availability of a selection of tasting flights matching the finest single malt whiskies with the superlative artisanal chocolates of Iain Burnett, the Highland Chocolatier. These flights are served in the tasting area on a bespoke tray and a member of the team will describe the best way to enjoy the whiskies and chocolate before leaving you to enjoy at your leisure. And visitors who have no time for either a tour or tasting are most welcome to relax in the visitor centre, watch a short DVD, or browse an extensive selection of fine malt whiskies on sale. Dalwhinnie is 1.5 hours south of Inverness on the A9, 2 hours north of Edinburgh on the A9 and 1 hour east of Fort William on the A86 and A82. Located close to the A9 and A86, its central location makes it a great base for exploring other single malt distilleries and is only a short drive away from Aviemore, Pitlochry and Fort William.

We had a small visit with some teenagers and we had hot chocolate at reception because they cannot drink alcohol. It was a quick and interesting visit where we learned few facts about the Whisky.

We visited this distillery in August: the tour guide was very nice, professional and competent. 1 hour tour and a final tasting of two different type of whiskey with chocolate. Very beautiful place!

Was doing a roaring trade with distillery tours and whisky tasting, but thought it could really do with a small cafe as well given the number of tourists and limited options close. Think it'd do a great trade!

Dalwhinnie showed up on the map for our drive, so we decided to stop. This was our fourth distillery tour in Scotland, and we were highly impressed. We learned a few things about making whisky, and we really enjoyed hearing our guide's stories. I especially...More

I found highly recommend paying for the advanced whisky tasting at the end of the visit - especially on a cold day. Everyone gets a taster but why not push the boat out. The guided tour was witty and informative. There were plenty of whisky...More

Dalwhinnie was the last whiskey stop for us in Scotland. We were getting whiskeyed-out by the time we reached Dalwhinnie, but we're glad we decided to make the detour. It's a lovely distillery from the outside. The inside is very nicely designed (as were all...More

We did the Dalwhinnie Tasting Tour at this location and feel rather lackluster about it. The tour guide was competent but not passionate or enthusiastic and showed little knowledge apart from the "tour script". She certainly wasn't unfriendly or rude, but just doing her job....More

We visited Dalwhinnie and had a brilliant tour from Peter. He was extremely informative, and the distillery is really interesting. It's really good value for money as you get two tasters at the end of the tour, and a £5 off a bottle of whiskey!

Our tour guide was admittedly "new" to whisky but it was still a good tour. I sprung for the full 6 tastings, which are all paired with chocolate. They let you keep the glass, and give you a coupon book of discounts based on how...More

Lovely shop, didn't do the tour but the staff were very helpful in helping me choose a bottle as a gift.

it's a 10 minute walk with a cafe on the way. you can't miss it. Big white building with Dalwhinnie written in 10 foot letters on the side. it's hard to get a taxi as the nearest firm is around 30 miles away.
