The water beneath the sands is hot springs Onsen water, and that is why the swans and ducks are buried in the sand to keep warm in the strong wind. There's a convenience store and bathroom right there. Souvenir shop sells cute Stuff.

We were here on 20 Oct while visiting Lake Mashu. Unlike Lake Mashu, we can walk along Lake Kussharo. Also, there are five free outdoor onsen along Lake Kussharo, where we managed to visit three of them. We also managed to see some nice autumn colour leaves when driving along the lake.

Water is indeed not cold during winter. That's why the swan is enjoying the swimming still during the cold season. But sadly for me, it's nothing of a 'must go' because there isn't much to see. Had a good lunch at the souvenir shop. Maybe its just that it was raining rather heavily when i am there.

We arrived in the area in the afternoon of a rainy overcast day so whilst there were tantalising glimpses of the landscape on the far side of the lake it was not that impressive. Early the next morning was sunny and clear however, albeit with a cold wind, and the distant surrounding hills dusted with fresh snow made the lake... More

We walked here from Genya youth guesthouse and visited kotan onsen and museam. Both very cool. Highly recommend it. Chilled out lake. Bring snacks. Public toilets at kotan.

There are several public onsens with great view of the lake. Simple changing facilities available. If it's best if you are driving. Also a 'sand-bath' which actually looks like a beach.

Even in spring, it was very cold here and soft snow fell on us. There are stunning views, a big tourist shop and a humble food hall where you order by vending machine. The miso ramen wasn't bad at all.

Lake Kussharo - Visited in April 16.. One of the most serene lakes ive visited. Reached there at dusk and couldnt stop gazing at dozens whopper swans just playing around the Kotan Onsen :) ..
