This is weather dependent but the locals rarely speak highly of Kussharo (they prefer Mashu!) but there its great to drive around, go to the beach, try one of the communal onsens. It was more than I expected

Lake Mashu beats the rest of the Lakes. Kussharo has an area for people to picnic and laze by the lake side. Nothing much.

The water beneath the sands is hot springs Onsen water, and that is why the swans and ducks are buried in the sand to keep warm in the strong wind. There's a convenience store and bathroom right there. Souvenir shop sells cute Stuff.

We walked here from Genya youth guesthouse and visited kotan onsen and museam. Both very cool. Highly recommend it. Chilled out lake. Bring snacks. Public toilets at kotan.

There are several public onsens with great view of the lake. Simple changing facilities available. If it's best if you are driving. Also a 'sand-bath' which actually looks like a beach.
