Definitely must do. You have not appreciated Shirakawa fully unless you go up there and look down. The observatory is not as far as it looks.

Our tour's bus dropped us at the observation deck overlooking Ogimachi village about 10:30 am. The area is relatively small, and I am glad that there were not too many tourists there at that time. While there was a gift shop with western toilets there,...More

This was my least favourite of the three villages we visited (Ainokura is the best by far in my view, followed by Suganuma), but you really do have to go up to this viewpoint as the landscape is pretty awesome. I only rate it average...More

First view of the village before you visit it. Can imagine how it was secluded for so long. It’s totally encompassed by mountains. Very authentic village

The observatory deck is right in front of a restaurant, provide excellent scenic vista of Shirakawago. Suggest to come here prior to visiting the village. We were so lucky that it was snowing when we were in Shirakawago, in April'18, which is not winter/snow season...More

Observatory brings a different image to my mind, it is, in reality a panoramic viewing point for the valley below and the village of thatched houses

Came here with a small tour group. Luckily the weather cooperated and we got a great view of the village below. Definitely worth a stop. Should only take 30 min.

You're welcome. The map should give you a clue about what to take a look at. After the observation deck, you might want to walk along the side of the small river running through the centre of the village. I viewed it from... More

I don't think you can catch the shuttle after check-in and also it will be a bit dark after 4.30 pm for photo-shooting during the spring months. Nonetheless, it is absolutely safe and easy to walk uphill to the Observatory... More
