Beautiful location with an easy hike to the lighthouse. Amazing views, great place for a day hike or a picnic. Would be a great location for a sunset view over the Sea of Japan.

Nice coastal view along the way. Can consider stopping at a couple of view points to see the beaches.

The drive to Shakotan Peninsula was completely worth the fabulous views of the coast that we were rewarded with. We stopped by Shakotan Port, Cape Kamui (cannot be missed!!) and Shimamui Coast/Beach (also a must do!!). My kids loved it at Shimamui beach (rocky, not sandy) and I loved how picturesque it was from the bottom as well as on the way down from the lookout point. Be warned that it's a steep climb down.

Reminiscent of the wild coast in Brittany. We wish we could've done some water activities like kayaking, but the water was apparently too rough for that in the fall/winter months. Still there are plenty of beautiful hiking trails, roadside seafood restaurants, and even a whiskey distillery in the area. A must do in Hokkaido.

A beautiful landscape but lack of supporting amenities for tourists. Yet worth to climb up the stairs, slopes and narrow paths as you can see and feel the blue sea and blue sky in a sunny day that made you feel relaxed and eye-opening. But must be fit enough as you may see some people coughing, some sitting down, some almost fainting ..... then you must try and exeprience the beauty of nature. Don't rely on public transport, drive your own car.

We left Sapporo around 8:00, drove past Otaru, and arrived at Nioka Whiskey Yoichi Distillery, which was another story. And then we continued to drive along beautiful, sometimes even breathtaking, seashores around the peninsula, which was disturbed with some long tunnels, though. We had lunch at Fuji Zushi, continued on driving to Shimamu Beach, which had another story to tell, and then to Cape Kamui. After the cape, we continued to drive along the Sea of Japan. When we got to Michi-no-eki Osukoi Kamoenai, it was tea time. That was the end of the breathtaking beauty of the strangely shaped rocks and the sea water of Shakotan blue. We were driving back to Sapporo, and, when we reached Otaru, it was almost supper time. We decided to drop on at Otaru, did some shopping and had supper at a branch shop of Fuji Zushi (again!). We enjoyed a full day trip in Hokkaido, although we had to drive in dusk through unfamiliar Sapporo streets.

After a few days in Sapporo, consider going to the Shakotan peninsula to visit Cape Kamui.
Cape Kamui is rightly beautiful on a good day and worth a small detour together with a Yoichi whisky distillery visit.
In my honest opinion, their are more beautiful spots around the world but this is not too bad too.

As part of a 3 week trip to Japan, we were visiting our son who lives in Hirafu-Niseko for a week. He has his own car so we decided to venture out on a self drive day trip which took in the Shakotan Peninsula
This place is stunning and the views out along the coast west towards Russia and South West towards N & S Korea are fantastic.
The speed limit for driving is 50 kph so progress is slow, but does allow for stress free easy sight seeing

We stayed in Otaru two nights, and on the second day we drove to Shakotan Peninsula. There are a few must places on this Peninsula (Kamui Misaki and Shimamu beach). We were there during the sea urchin season and had a sea urchin feast. On the way back, we made a quick stop at Nikka Whisky Factory, which is a very nice site. A good day trip from Otaru but it is also a very nice area to stay depending on your itinerary.

We were there in mid-September last year. It was lovely but we were lucky to dodge the rain.

Hello,
May I ask which tour company did you go with and how much it cost?
Thank you.

We didn't go with a tour company. We hired a car from Nippon car rental (about $130 for two days) and drove ourselves. The roads are all very easy and the relevant signs are in English.
