There's something magical about this place. We were there mid April, and there was still snow in big patches around. The onsen is pretty hot by 'western' standards, but you'll be able to find less hot spots in the outdoor pools. The onsen is open...More

To get there, take Shingansen from Tokyo to Jomo Kogen station and transfer to hotel bus to Takaragawa Onsen. Take indoor bath at the hotel before heading out to the outdoor onsen. Don't forget the towels provided at the hotel.

I was so exited to spend a lovely day relaxing in the beautiful outdoor onsen, however this was all ruined once I entered and was confronted with the horrible and unsettling sight of four bears in filthy cramped cages. There are some bulls#*t signs bagging...More

Unlike in many other onsens, here it seemed like people did not quite bother as to how we dress. Some covered certain body parts while walking to the pool and took off all once inside. Some were all-out naked inside and outside (while walking from...More

Do all women wear the "dress robes" while in the water? Or can they just wrap themselves in a towel? My wife would rather not wear a large robe in the water but does not want to be the only woman not wearing the robe. Thanks!

You will only be given a small towel actually. The woman onsen you can either wrap your self with the small towel or go naked. :D Whichever you are comfortable.
