I had the chance to got on the cable car for free, otherwise I wouldn't use it. Instead, do the short hike. In October as far as I remember there was no spectacular blooming season, the view of the mountain range was okay. If you want real mountains for hike or watch in Saitama prefecture, go the the heart of... More

As per title, Mountain Natural beauty in Saitama Area. Take about 30 minutes from Tokorozawa station with express train Red Arrow or can directly from Ikebukuro. From Seibu Chichibu station walk to Hanabatake station to change train to Nagatoro. And walk from there to rope way. Can see mountain range from above.

A bit of a strenuous hike to the top, quite muddy in February so wear athletic shoes if not hiking boots. The nice views, picturesque shrine, and groves of blossoming wintersweet and plum make it worth the effort. Or you can take the quick ride up in the cable car.

The Mt. Hodo ropeway made it easy to get to the top, where we walked around to view the surrounding area and check out the changing Fall colors. The maples with red leaves interspersed between the cedars in the grove at the top of the mountain made for some nice contrasts when taking photos.
