I did this as a full one day hike whilst staying at Anbo. Get an early start; you'd want to be up and on the road by sunrise at the latest. I hired a guide (Jen from Yakushima Life) at 16,000yen. When you consider buses are sporadic at best, and taxis will drop you off (and pick up!) at the... More

It is more than possible to do this walk in three days arriving to the island on the ferry (12.30 pm) catch a bus to shirtani, immediately get walking, get to the Takatsuka hut just before sunset, then summit miyanoura the next day with another overnight in the Yodogawa hut before getting going the next morning and catching two rather... We spend about 8 hours on the trails. Nothing to challenging, except a few boulders where you needed ropes to get on top, and great scenery all the way. We did see a family with small kids ( around 10) make it to the top as well. You do need to plan your transportation well as buses are limited.

This was the best hike we had among the Nakayama Senkyo, Mt. Kuju, Mt. Aso and Mt. Miyanouradake treks we did in Kunisaki and Yakishima. The locals say it rains 366 days a year in Yakishima; however, we were blessed to have one rare day of sunshine, and it was tremendous: beautiful landscape (forest, marsh, big rocks, streams and tall... Well worth the effort we were extremely lucky to have mostly fine weather and stunning views which included Tanegashima. The marsh area is reminiscent of the walls of Jerusalem walk in Tasmania. Simply beautiful and atmospheric with swirling mists. We've done a reasonable amount of walking but the progress on this walk was slower than I've experienced. You had to... More

I did a lot of hiking. But Yakushima mountains give lots of water stream at high elevation. The rocks near the peaks are very impressive.

I went at the beginning of March 2014. I did this over two days, staying in one of the mountain huts overnight. It was still quite cold and snow covered a lot of the path the last 2 hours up to the top. Certainly worth the extra effort to make it to the top although be wary of the time.... More

We took one of the small hiking trails from the rainforest up the mountain, it was very nice and a little bit exhausting :)
