A fellow European-themed model railroader encouraged a group of us to make our way to the Kaeserberg layout while on a railfanning trip through Germany and Switzerland. Those of us who made the effort to get there were not disappointed.
It's not the easiest layout to visit. You have to take a train, then a bus, then a bit of an uphill walk from the bus stop to get to the layout, which lies outside the city of Fribourg. I recommend taking a taxi from Fribourg station, but with a dozen of us making the trek, the city bus was the best option.
This is not a toy train layout. This is a model railroad. Trains run at realistic speeds through realistic scenery. Electric locomotives have their pantographs up against the prototypically-strung catenary. Freight cars are weathered, and the day-night cycle shows off the lighted passenger cars and realistic layout lighting. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the layout operation is done using protypical practices for Swiss train priority and scheduling.
The layout is in the process of expanding, and many of us look forward to making the trip back to see the new section. Is it Miniatur Wunderland? No. But it is just as captivating, if not more, albeit from a more critical model railroader's perspective.

I’d love to write a balanced review about this attraction but I can’t as it was closed despite turning up on a Wednesday after checking the website it seems the 29/5 the museum was closed - a bit of an inconvenience as we’d driven from England!

Moral is check the website or a plea to the attraction open more frequently

Hello, We are very sorry that our museum was closed that day. We are a private foundation, without any financial support and we cannot open every day. Our opening days are published on our website. We don't think it's very fair to give ourselves a bad mark because we were closed. It would be nice to correct. We hope that we can welcome you on another occasion.

Visited with our two nieces. It's a delightful maquette that keeps on growing every year.
The details are very close to giving you that "real" feeling. Make yourself smaller and you'll see BIG trains rolling. You would want to be on the train going up the hill and then through the tunnel and finally the Main Station.
My compliments to the maker of this wonder and I'll wait a couple of years to return & see the changes & improvements.
I can only recommend a visit. And enjoy Fribourg at the same time.

Wether you are an amateur of model railways or real trains, this is a place not to be missed. The tour starts with a movie which shows the history of the place. In the showrooms there are kilometers of tracks going through a great variety of typical landscapes with model trains running like clockwork.
It is not open every day, so check the web site before you go there.

Whether you are 5 year old or 85, this place will amaze you :) Especially when the night falls on the model railway... Sooo many details you could spend 10 hours in it and still discover new things!

It’s an amazing museum, one of its kind! Train aficionados will find all kinds of models in some incredible large displays. Kids & grownups will find something to enjoy. Prices are quite expensive, even for the Swiss standards, though not sure if you’ll find it worth it especially those not attracted by the technical issues.

A fantastic display of train modelling in the 21st century! For a train modeller of 50 years one could see so much how the hobby has evolved. Huge display on 3 levels with a short film at the start. Then a self guided visit over the 3 levels with a running visual commentary/expalnation. You admire the trains as day turns to night and then the sun rises again.Fantastic sound display as well. Great for young and young at heart train enthusiasts. Well worth the diversion if in the region.

I went there with my 2 years old and it was very interesting.
First a video explaining how all the museum was made and then you can profit of the miniature trains.
Really fun to watch with so much great details.

I visited the place with a bunch of kids, not sure who was the youngest, them or me? Marvel to see, dreams of when trains still made noises.

Huge model train set, took 17 years to build. The visit though starts with a 15 minutes movie about how and why the set was built. Pretty boring for little ones who just want to see the trains. And also repetitive if you go there several times. The model itself is impressive and worth the visit.
