We were disappointed with the Abbaye de Largesse. On the plus side we visited in the afternoon when there were few tourists and it was cool. On the down side, we visited during the week when only part of the abbey was open. The gardens and the cloisters. the really interesting part of the abbey, were only open on the... More

We enjoyed this beautiful abbey that runs along the Orbieu River in the medieval town of Lagrasse. If you are concerned about entry fees skip the public paid part and just see the part that is run by the monks...much nicer. Access for tickets to this part is in the gift shop as you enter the big gates. You get... More

A peaceful setting alongside the river, this abbey is worth a visit after wandering through the old village of Lagrasse and crossing the old stone bridge.

The building and associated history were particularly interesting but access to some parts of the building were restricted due to restoration works. The entrance fee was reduced accordingly but would like to visit again when fully accessible. The town of Lagrasse was interesting with some great views.

This Abbey is divided into 2 parts a council owned bit with a lovely cafe in the entrance and grounds worth a coffe stop. However the 4 euros to look inside I felt was hardly worth it, but the actual working Abbey adjoining which only allows visitsfor 1 hour in the afternoon also at 4 euros was fabulous the monks... We visited the abby (public part) and were very disappointed (except the roof of the dormitory). Not much to see, half closed .... there are plenty of abyss in the surroundings that are substantially better, more beautiful, better preserved .... Apparently there is also a second part (run by the monks), but we did not know and we could not... More

Their are two parts to the Abbaye and they are both worth a visit. It is not hard to see why travellers made the pilgrimage here in medieval times, as today. We returned in the evening to listen to the monks take Vespers, it was truly magical.

This abby has an interesting visitors center, located in the beautiful ancient village Lagrasse. Their expo shows the history of the abby trough the ages and gives an interesting view on the live in a monastery in France.
