Krishna Mandapam is the first monument which one encounters if one comes from the Shore Temple towards Arjuna's Penance and Krishna's Butter Ball. It is well-worth a good 20 minutes of one's time. The mandapam contains beautiful carvings, representing the life of Lord Krishna. Of particular note are the carvings representing Krishna lifting Govardhan hill with one finger to shelter... More

To the south of Arjuna’s penance is Krishna Mandap which we visited . The principal scene shows Krishna lifting Gowardha mountain to protect the female and male cowherds from the storm raised by Indra . Krishna is shown supporting the mountain on his left palm , the other hand being in Varad mudra . Close to him are gopis standing... More

Pancha Pandava rathas, arjuna's penance, butterball and this one are a group of monuments situated next to each other. This one is also good. But at this point i felt like i should've readed about this place's history a bit.

Mahabalipuram is one amazing structure after another; this is no exception and is yet another must see! This temple, accessed from the main road, is filled with yet more beautifully intricate carvings that are well worth seeing.

This is a small manadapa like monolithic structure, situated near the Arjuna's penance. This manadapa houses tales associated with Lord Krishna such as his playful childhood pastimes. Very well maintained and beautiful carvings.

During our full day sightseeing trip to Mahabalipuram from Chennai, we had visited this amazing site located right beside Pancha Pandav Mandap and Arjuna Penance in the complex maintained by Archeological Survey. This is one of the biggest and best Mandap since the sculptures were detailed and lively. We saw beautiful rock cut sculptures of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan hill.... More

From Outside, it seems to be a normal cave. But there is beautiful carving inside. It is near Arjuna's Penance. From left side of this cave, you can climb up to reach Raya Gopura.
