Arjuna’s Penance is one of the magnificent monuments of Mahabalipuram. This wonderful bas air relief dates back to the mid-seventh century. Arjuna's Penance’ is an extract from the Mahabharata, of how Arjuna, performed severe austerities in order to obtain Shiva's weapon pasupatha... The subject of the massive structure is either Arjuna's Penance or the Descent of the Ganges, or possibly... More

Not a must visit place. But good to visit if you are on the way. Very crowded and you can finish many sculptures at once.

Loved Arjuna's penance. It is not only beautiful and interesting carving, but also has a little joke. Look for the carving of the cat mimicking Arjuna's penance to a crowd of mice!

Secondly, parking is a problem, so park a liitle away and then walk around. Coming to the bas relief- It emerges suddenly at the... More

This magnificent relief, carved in the mid-seventh century, measures approximately 30m long by 15m high. The rock featuring Arjuna’s Penance has skilfully carved sculptured figures . There are... This bas relief, carved out of massive boulders and measuring 30m by 12m is spectacular. Featuring animals, spirits and deities and huge, almost life size elephants is an awe inspiring sight. Various interpretations, including the creation story, even if you don't know the exact meaning, it is still so impressive that it needs lots of examination to really appreciate the... More
