An island on the eastern tip of Namibia. About 12km in length and 6km in width. It has about 30 villages and an airport. You will see a 2000 year old baobab tree. A risky climb up the tree and when you reach the top, you can see the point in the river where Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet.... More

The island is at the east end of Namibia's Caprivi Strip, between Botswana and Zambia, and is a result as well as victim of colonial history. Today, its residents are trying to develop a tourist economy which will provide employment for more of its population, a tall order for any locale, but more so due to the island's semi-isolation and... We wanted to see this village where people had to use their passports to cross to Botswana to buy their food. Climbing off the boat we were struck with the heat, 39°C, hard dark stone, walking through the trees which provide no shade as they had lost their leaves. The village was baked hard into the island. There was a... More

This tiny island in the Caprivi Strip is a gem. The villages are tiny, but there is definite progress: a paved road is planned for spring 2016, electricity is promised, the health clinic next to the school is thriving.

This wonderful island steeped with history of South Africa, Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe, we experienced a wonderful tour of the island and villages and when climbing the baobab tree could see all 4 countries.

I visited Impalila Island for one day (19 July) more by small boat than on foot and am glad for that. The inner part of the island is mostly rocks strewn about with lots of trash, unfortunately. You have to go to Namibia customs to get on the island but the Customs office is 200 m up a rocky hill.... More

We had occasion to visit Impalila Island in April and stayed at the Impalila Island Lodge. The individual lodges were wonderful, each with a deck overlooking the Chobe River. We were visited by monkeys and heard hippos calling to each other. The Main building has a infinity pool and hot tub. There is also a library on the premises. The... More
