A friend took us to Papplewick Pumping Station today as he is a member of the volunteers there. I was really impressed by the place -- so interesting and it was fantastic to see how lovingly and cleverly all the equipment has been preserved. Great for the kids - lots for them to do, also a great cafe with a... More

The ornate buildings and amazing pumping mechanism gave us an informative couple of hours. The engineers were keen to explain the workings in layman's terms. Our visit was when a boiler was fired up so we could see it all working. Such decoration on what is a utility building. I took loads of photos and will be returning the next... More

I went here over 30 years ago (I think) as a child as I lived in Nottingham. Visited again this weekend, a bank holiday and in steam, to see again. I love it. What a great piece of engineering, architecture, and surroundings. We also paid the extra couple of £ to do the timed tour with guide to the underground... More

This is totally worth anyone's visit. Do check the website for open days - in steam is best but static days are also worth your time. We called in on what was supposed to be a static open day but were dismayed by a "closed" notice board. They were doing maintenance (cleaning out a boiler) but bless the volunteers (Ian... More

Many forms of British Victorian engineering at their very best. First, the Pump House which we purposely visited on a Steaming Day, a must! The building, the size, the smell, the sound of steam being released. How these huge beam engines are able to move so effortlessly and quietly is truly incredible. Though, you can feel the movement through the... More

This station has a beautiful machine. I have been twice and seen it working once, it is worth seeing! There is a steam punk fair that goes on once a year and it suits the station.

We arrived on a damp Sunday morning knowing that they were not 'pumping' on the day but thought it might be worth the trip out. And it really was! The volunteers there are soooo enthusiastic it's infectious. They were cleaning out boilers and generally cleaning the equipment and gearing, etc but made sure every visitor had a full tour with... As a piece of industrial heritage, Papplewick Pumping Station has to Be one of the most interesting unusual and well preserved Victorian Water Works in the country. It highly ornate ironwork and stained glass windows showcases the civic pride of the Victorians took with their contribution to the health and wellbeing of the population. Dear Morturn, Thank you for your review and I am sorry to hear that you and your friends had an unfortunate experience when visiting the Pumping Station in October. The behaviour described sounds very out of character for our volunteers that help run the museum but the Trust takes such comments very seriously and I will be investigating the incidents... More
