Capo Vaticano, the last strip of land before the Straits of Messina,...

Capo Vaticano, the last strip of land before the Straits of Messina, thrusts dramatically from the sea, its white rocks battered and eroded by centuries of breakers that have taught sailors to respect and fear this fascinating, almost mysterious place. Capo Vaticano its majestically enthroned in a turquoise sea, as it dominates the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands to the north-west, the Gulf of to the north-east, to the south-west the Gulf of Gioia Tauro and, beyond, the Straits of Messina culminating in Mount Etna. This part of Calabria, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, contains the ancient fascination of a thousand years of history. The sea that caresses the snow-white beaches and the wildness of the rocks make visitors lose their sense of time, as it conceals beneath its waves the secrets of ancient shipwrecks, the relics of which have frequently been discovered. Life in the area is dominated by fishing; its waters are visited by the great swordfish, tuna, blue sharks etc. as they cross the Capo Vaticano every spring. Simply beautiful, the color of the water is a mirror, the beach is amazing. Off season so very quiet, however summer must be crowded.

There are places in Calabria, charm our eyes. Places unthinkable .. one of these, I was lucky enough to find it by chance while I was traveling with some friends .. I call it '' rock balcony with sea front walkway '' .. an amazing place !! do not know the name of the zone, located near Capo Vaticano (I... More

this coast is really lovely. The beaches are relatively clean and the wather is clean. When you find the lighthouse, you have a nice view on the coastal line.

It is a little difficult to find this look-out as Google maps takes you to a place down the road, but it is a lovely view when you get there. There is place for a few cars to park and a cafe if you want to get something to eat or drink (but a little pricy).

We went on May 1 when everywhere was closed and found this little bar down by the lighthouse open which was a delight as it was raining. Very friendly, nice snacks and an old man sold us some tomatoes which we needed. We bought some farm wine on the way back for 3 euros a litre but it was a... More

Lovely beach. We walked to the right onto the next beach which was a lot quieter. There are three bars so plenty of food and drink. Just watch the Jelly's in the water. We hired a pedalo (€10 for hour and a half) and swam out in the beautiful clear water

Stopped at to place in this stunning area. Stretches of sandy beaches slope softly into the sea. Can get very busy due to popularity. There's excellent snorkelling to be found on the northern side towards the light house.

This area is very quiet, not near to any restaurants nor supermarkets. You need too rent a car or take the shuttle bus from the hotel to reach the town Tropea (which is a nice city to walk around in. Lot of restaurants and shops and a nice wiew over the sea.) but it takes time to wait for it.... More
