Volcano was primary reason I've come to Capo Verde. And it worth that. Around 2 hours to get to the top and around an hour to descend from the other side of volcano. How to get there? 3 options. 1st, take a taxi, it will cost around 70-80 Eur min, guide will cost you around 50 Eur. 2nd, take a... More

This is about trip from Sal by plane to the crater rather than climbing the volcano The crater is an amazing place...eruption in 2014 covered the village to some depth with lava. Locals have come back to rebuild their vineyard and attract tourists Well worth doing if you get the chance Nice hotel with crater produce for lunch

Our original plan had been to stay at Casa Marisa and go up the Pico do Fogo with a local guide. Due to a back injury of mine a few days earlier on São Vicente island we had to give up this idea. At least we still managed to do a 3 hours walk (at my slow pace) to the... More

We visited the small village sunk under the latest eruption and it was a shocking view, a mixture of sorrow and vital reaction, very instructive. Then the stroll under the peak, across the "moon-like" view created by the volcano were magic and incredible, really one of the peak moments of our stay in Cabo Verde.

We set out from our hotel in the valley of Cha das Caldeiras just before it got light to begin our ascent of Fogo. The darkness was intensified by the blackness of the surrounding lava flow until gradually we saw other torches heading towards the volcano. We were grateful for our early start as it was still relatively cool and... More

The ascent to the peak is demanding but doable in about 3 hours, the view from the top is amazing, the descent along the ashes is just fantastic!!

I elected to trek the mountain myself. Having studied as many maps and satellite imagery, I decided it was safe enough to not need to buy into a tour. Granted, I probably missed out on lots of tid-bits of information that o ly local tour guides etc have. But I relished purity, solitude and beauty of the place. The weather... More

It's a hard climb with a very early start - pre 5am. Use a local guide who explain all the history and devastation of the eruptions over the decades. Long, hard ascent with some narrow and rocky parts but at the top - wow. Views over the island and of the whole ancient caldeira, and down to the sea. The... More
