Mariefred is some 65 km east of Stockholm easily reachable by train. The last part of the trip can be made by bus or by a narrow gauge railway with a train pulled by a real stem engine. The railway station is rebuilt as it was some 100 years ago.The most important attraction is the Gripsholm Castle built around 1540... More

set on the shores of lake Malaren, the castle overlooks the village of Mariefred. Unfortunately it was not open on the day that we visited however you could still walk in and around the grounds. Particularly of interest were the two cannons which had been given by the Russians back in the 17th century. Also there are some old rune... More

About 70-80 rooms in the castle, really nice atmosphere. Loved the theater inside. So many paintings and portraits as the castle has one of the biggest collections of portrait in the world.

This is a very beautiful experience! A large parking lot near the castle, from which a short alley and a lifting bridge leads to the castle. A red, well maintained and beautiful architectural castle on the shore with a nice inner yard wellcomes you. The interior is also very well maintened but the ticket is a little pricy for what... The entire castle is open to you. You can get guides, you can get a self guide book, you can ask many attendants all over the place. This place is amazing due to another reason. It still has the original theater in it, I have never seen behind the scenes of such an old theater. The pulleys, the wheals for... More

Amazing castle with a self-guided tour. Entry is free with Stockholm card. Tour guides are also available in English. In the summer you can reach the castle the boat. And in the winter we train and bus. Only 30 minutes away. The surrounding Villages also very interesting. It has several nice restaurants and shops. Relaxing parks on the waterfront are... More

Gripsholms slott is one of the one of the castle commissioned by King Gustav Vasa, who is considered to be the most influential king Sweden has ever had. It was from beginning a fortress but most of the time the castle has been a home to royalty, as well as a prison for royalty. Nowadays the castle is the proud... More

We had to rush through the castle because it already closes at 16:00 hrs, which of course is a bit ridiculous. Anyway, it's a wonderful castle/palace in a totally different style than Versailles or Potsdam. It has rooms that are extensively decorated in wood (very LOTR) and an overall much more sober appearance. Highlight is the fully functional theatre space.... More

We went to Gripsholm Castle in August 2016 and did one of their guided tours in English there. The guide spoke excellent English but I felt that somehow all of the castle's history wasn't completely covered (I had some previous knowledge of it too). A shame the castle closed only 15 minutes after the tour finished, so the time afterwards... More

We only went into the castle because we had arrived by boat from Stockholm and it started to pour - we went into the castle to take cover! So our visit was quite rushed - we had been under the illusion there was a cafe but no! However the castle is very interesting especially, for us, the paintings of the... More
