We arrived at the village around 5:00 pm. Thousands of herons were already there. The best spot for viewing is on a viewing platform above the village community centre - the main attraction there being the several ping-pong tables. There are chairs on the viewing platform and a small kiosk selling cold drinks (eg. 2 Bintang beers and 1 fanta... More

A lovely late afternoon activity. Rent a scooter for $6 a day and its only 3 kms from Ubud to find this little village and you can watch the Herons come home to roost every single day of the year. From about 5 pm they fly across the sky from the West and settle in the trees. There are literally... More

We went around 5:15 as herons come to this area to cover all the trees in the village that are their homes. I think the entrance fee was 2000 rupees per person. Yes all trees are full of herons. And they are also flying from one tree to another. Good thing we had umbrellas- for herons also poo all the... More

I visited Ubud in November 2016 and decided to check this interesting event out. I arrived at about 4:45 and the birds are already well underway assembling nests, mating and generally doing what birds do. The open area above the table tennis hall allows a magnificent spectacle of the birds continuously flying in to roost. There are drinks and snacks... More

Unless you've done your research, you potentially miss this gem of a place, so close to Ubud. Even if you're not particularly a bird fan, it's difficult not to be amazed by hundreds of birds returning 'home' at the end of the day between 5.30-6.30. There is a convenient seating area on top of the local table tennis centre to... More

Since 1965, thousands of Herrons have nested in the trees on the side of the road. The males fly off en mass in the morning and then return at night to feed the females. THis started out of the blues and happens every day at around 5:00 pm. Not easy to find even with a GPS. Leave UBUD and go... More

Watching the sun set over padi fields and waiting for a few birds to fly home is not everyone's jam. But if it happens to be yours, this is quite a beautiful way to spend an evening. Petulu village is basically one main road. On both ends, there are official-type people who will ask for ticket money (20K rupiah, really... More

If you are interested in bird watching or photography, this is probably the place for you. It's relaxing to sit and watch the herons fly in the village. You won't see hundreds of them flying in but they come in batches of 10-20 birds. The lookout point is only 1 spot, but the birds are spread out all over the... More

Whilst it probably wasn't as amazing as I had suspected (the birds all come in flocks from different directions which dilutes the 'mass effect' a little), it's still an incredible phenomenon to see all the birds arriving at dusk. Worth the visit if you're in the area.
