The Furnas Research and Monitoring Centre (CMIF) integrates a broad transversal intervention, articulating in one single project, the programs and actions of the “Plano de Ordenamento da Bacia Hidrografica da Lagoa das Furnas” (Furnas Lake Developmant and Watershefd Plan), notably the rehabilitation of its margins.

It was the winner of the "Premio Internazionale di Pietra Architetture 2011 - XII edizione" and finalist of SECIL Prize in 2013. It was the cover of the Spanish publication "El Croquis" and prominent target in some architectural websites.

CMIF functions as an observatory and integrated centre for knowledge dissemination, playing an important role in the translation of scientific information to a language able to captivate visitors into better understanding nature, as well as in recreational and ecological rehabilitation activities, all in a landscape that is constantly changing.

It includes an auditorium for workshops and seminars and a large covered area used for exhibitions that, through interactive mechanisms, tools accessible to users, multimedia platforms and guided tours, lead visitors to the discovery of the lagoon ecosystem as well as local flora and fauna.

In addition, there are adjacent outdoor areas, including picnic and contemplation areas and a large green space with a privileged view over the lagoon, where visitors can enjoy the scenery and develop leisure activities.

Very interesting research centre

By all means go there for an interesting report from the nature Project taking Place, and their Little gift shop to support the Project. We bought local honey!

The Centro is about 10 minutes from the nearest parking lot, a pleasant walk along the shore of the Furnas lake. It offers a 15-minute presentation (in Portuguese or English) on its mission and current projects and also presents an interesting video. There also is a small café where you can enjoy an expresso while looking at the beautiful scenery.

After walking down couple kms from the road side parking lot, found this spot. It has some maps on the wall and a souvenir type shop, but the BEST part was the Coffee & pastries that they offered. Fresh made coffee for like a Euro and then pastries for just over a Euro. Good place to stop and recharge if... More

We stumbled upon this beautiful place while hiking around Furnas. Had a nice coffee. And as a tree lover I really liked the biggest Norfolk Island Pine in Europe.

I passed by this information centre when hiking around the lake. A modern style building, but it blends in perfectly with the environment. If you want to visit the exhibition inside, the entrance price is 3 €. Included in the visit is a 15 minute documentary about the protection and restoration of the lake. Not an must see, but it... High quality presentations, varied, educational but not hard work! Very welcome snack bar at entrance. The building itself is interesting also - almost hidden as it merges with the environment. Nearby is a lovely seat swinging from a tree.

Easily found on a circular walk around Furnas Lake (about 1.5 kms at most from main road), this is a small complex of modern buildings. There is no obvious reception or signs directing visitors to reception and no one to ask for more information. The cafe was also closed as we walked past at approximately 10.30. Nearby is the Jose... The people and the setting deserve 5 stars, however it can be interesting for a very specific group of people (landscape architecture, eutrophication of the lake) whereas for others it may be too specific, possibly not interesting. Going there supports their work and the cause.

Very interesting architecture and exhibit. An informative video about the issues and solutions concerning the lake and its ecosystem and a sweet exhibit hall. Nicely done. A worthwhile stop if walking around the lake or as a destination on its own.
