A very unique church. If you love art history like I do, definitely go see it. Great view of Mont Blanc too.

The whole village felt a friendly welcoming place and Eglise Notre-Dame-de-Toute-Grace reflected this in its architecture, design, art and "spirituality". This is the opposite of a cold austere gothic building. It is lined with works of art from many established artists (including Matisse) who responded to requests to help create the environment of this small church. A building for contemplation and reflection inside and then outside as you then gaze at the natural surroundings

Eglise Notre-Dame de Toute Grace, also known locally as "the Chagall church" sits on a lovely site on plateau d'Assy, with breathtaking vistas all around. Mont Blanc is towering over the place. Plateau d'Assy had a long history of caring for consumption patients during the days before general vaccination. Faced with a decrease in the number of their traditional clientele the sanatoriums reorganized after the second world war as retreats for nervous disease-afflicted patients. All this sanatorial population needed some spiritual help and the local priest initiated the construction of a suitable place of worship. A who's who of modern art most famous names (Bazaine, Bonnard, Bony, Braque, Chagall, Couturier, Hébert-Stevens, Huré, Kijno, Léger, Lipchitz, Lurçat, Mary, Matisse, Richier, Rouault, Signori, Strawinsky, are some of the contributors) were happy to contribute works of art for decoration. The result is a wonderful oasis of calm set not far from an area where frenetic sports activities draw large numbers of tourists mostly (but not only) in winter. A visit may take from 30 to 60 minutes, or longer, function of your thoroughness in looking at the various pieces. There is no entrance fee. Not to be missed are the various modern sculptures installed along the highway winding up to Passy. I found a Calder set in a switchback in the road climbing towards the church particularly striking. Also keep your eyes up looking for the paragliders. There are many; very colorful

All depend on your interests. Nothing flashy here, no gold, no baroque, no gigantesque propostions ; no guided tour either. A simple church, still in use by the community. But to the one who love modern art, or are attracted to spirituality, this church is a must, and I would add that, solely by itself, it is worth a trip to the Alps. Really unique, as a project of peace and unification, with works of Rouault, Leger, Matisse, Bonnard and other artists of the XXe century less known but equally talented. There are paintings, glass-tinted works, tapestry (yes, and splendid!), sculpture, engravings (a fascinating tabernacle by Braque), but the architecture of the church is also impressive, as the materials with which it has been built. We were there in May, mostly alone in the place, and one month later, I still can recapture the feeling of discovering a treasure.

If the modern artworks of this church were in a museum, it would be a famous museum. But they are integral parts of a small local church in a little mountain town - this is incredible, And its placement, near a place called (in French) the Garden of Peaks, since it is surrounded by mountains including Mont-Blanc, heightens the feeling. A beautiful and spiritual place that is well-worth going out of your way to see.

(Details and hours are hard to find except in a note on the door, but I believe the note said that it is open until 6:30pm every day.)

The whole thing is superb. Don't miss the crypt which you enter from what feels like round the back of the church.

This church is well worth visiting. Imposing, pieces by famous modern artists such as Chagall, Bony, Lipchitz, Léger, Matisse. Wonderful stained glass windows including by Marguerite Huré.
In the hour we were there, there were no other visitors.
The book/catalogue costs €12 and is worth it. However please be aware it's in French only.

In this region there are many baroque churches and this one belongs to a real historical and artistic patrimony. Just don't leave the place without visiting it.
