We enjoyed walking around this park visiting historical buildings, admiring canons, and simply being outdoors & admiring the river across us. I was pleasantly surprised to see several giant lily pads in one of the lotus ponds. This pond looked way too small for the...More

In a strategic location at the confluence of the rivers Suriname and Commewijne was built in the 18th century a fort, called Nieuw Amsterdam, to protect the plantations further inland. It was built as a pentagon with 5 bastions, of which remains can still be...More

Nice to stroll in the outside areas, some good info about the place and its history but the way it is presented can be much improved and innovated. Still a good afternoon spending especially if you travel there by boat.

Nice and neatly kept museum with beautifully restored tropical buildings and lots of tropical trees and flowers. Informative and fun for kids. Not far from Paramaribo.

It's not a fort in the sense of walls and parapets...more of a military installation surrounded by a soil berm. There are 2 powder magazines and an old jail to see. The other structures are gone. There are some useful exhibits on plantation and slave...More

This fort, which is still not fully preserved, contains a number of interesting old buildings and fortifications. There is a walking trail around. Of particular interest is the gunpowder magazine, which looks like a church and is carefully designed not to allow sparks to enter...More

This piece of Surinamese history is being neglected. Signs need to be redone as many are so faded that they are barely legible. The government should take the lead in preserving its historical timepieces. It is not that easy to access. We took a boat...More

Visited Fort Nieuw Amsterdam in october (very hot so bring a hat), walking past all the guns gave a new perspective on the history of Suriname. A must see when you are in Suriname, you can combine a visit with a bike ride.
