Having spent an hour on the platform (on April 2nd 2015) we were told that the train was cancelled due to unemployed phosphate miners picketing the line. The local governor turned up and there was a heavy police presence but the miners wouldn't budge. We were very disappointed but in view of their new found freedom of speech and right... More

We had a real good trip with plenty of vantage sights to take the views of the Atlas Mountains.......we had a stop to stretch our legs and all in.....well worth doing this rail journey. We have done a few stunners around the world and the Red Lizard is as good as any for views.

One of my highlights was the train ride...very old and unique train. The ride up takes an hour and it stops a few times to get off and take pictures of the fabulous scenery thru the gorges and mountains. The ride back is about 45 min. Check out the toilettes as they are quaint as well. The dining car serves... More

Train left an hour late. It was picturesque. The canyons were nice. And a bright sparkling stream turned out to be polluted water from a mining area. It was one of the bright spots from the tour - unfortunately.

I have taken other tours in the area but this was by far the best. They had a great buy one get one free deal for seniors. The drivers weren't dry and automated like other tours. They were personable and friendly and each driver added their own flair. The train was low to the ground and easy to get on... More

The Red Lizard Train like it's namesake hugs the valley sides and climbs through the town and into the mountains. There are a few stops for spectacular photo shots and then the train stops for repositioning the enging and down you go back to the station. This is a fun novelty ride from Metlaoui station and although we were delayed... More

Red Lizard Train, Metaloui, Tunisia Formerly the royal train, exclusively for the whim of the ruling Bey, the Red Lizard is a four-coach excursion from the bustling market town of Metaloui into the lower reaches of the Atlas Mountains. For two hours, from a 1000 departure, you can relax in opulent style as you climb above the desert below. A... More
