Had a day in Johannesburg after our safari and before our redeye flight. Chose to spend it at the cradle of humankind museum and caves. Very happy with our decision. It was a great place to spend several hours. The exhibits are very well done.

We traveled from Pretoria to this location. It is out in the country. We arrived to find the ticket booth open and a significant discount for seniors. The tour began in a museum style room whereby the visitor can read all about the origin of...More

Maropeng was very interesting from the walks, boat ride and the museum, this is a must for anyone the rich culture and history and it is also not expensive.

We visited on a Friday afternoon and really enjoyed the hike through the caves. 6’4” tall, certainly made for some interesting passage walks, but it was worth the trip. We decided not to take the guided tour through the museum and took a walk. Cut...More

Learning about the age, evidence and fossils of humankind was really interesting. The guide was amusing and knowledgable. We also went to a second museum, which had a short boat ride (which was unexpected but a lot of fun) and further interactive information about humankind...More

I had high expectations for this world-renowned attraction, only to find it to be quite boring and surprisingly not up-to-date on the latest anthropological findings - maybe because it is now known NOT to be the Cradle of Humankind anymore?!. Lots of walking to learn...More

After strolling through the first exhibit, we thought that no way you could end up spending more than two hours here. Well, that was before the boat ride. Funny ideas, well made. VERY friendly staff, really amazing.

We were glad to have toured Maropeng, but it was not as informative as Sterkfontein. The information seemed a bit basic after Sterkfontein, yet we were glad that we took the time to visit. It was more physically and academically accessible than Sterkfontein.

I would agree with the earlier answer. Our visit to view the exhibition and the caves took between 3 and 4 hours.

If you are not adverse to driving, a rental car is the best option. It will be much cheaper than booking a tour for two and will allow you to visit other sites such as the nearby Sterkfontien Caves on your own schedule... More
