Amazing complex displaying the wealth of this Wang family. It looks like a small walled city, but it's just their family residence and extended family... and great grand children's residence! Huge place. Sculptures everywhere which is a sign of wealth. Had lunch at a small restaurant near the entrance by the parking lot. Run by a family. Good food. And... More

Exploring the massive Wang's compound, full of houses with traditional Chinese architecture, lets you feel as though you're walking back in time. If you're staying in Pingyao city, you can hire your own private taxi for around 100rmb to get you there and back.

There are two ways of reaching it from pingyao: taking 2 busses or taking the train and the bus. We did both. We went to the bus station of pingyao and were directed to a bus (nr 2007, 9rmb) to jiexiu. After one hour and some waiting, we borded bus 11 (5rmb) for another 30min. To go back we took... More

Wang's Compound was impressive for it's sheer size and ornamental structures. A mini walled city. There are a couple dozen courtyards to meander through. Some of it isn't open yet. Great views from the top where you truly get the scope of the whole complex. Requires a fair bit of walking and a knowledgeable guide would be highly advisable (Miller... More

The Wang's family compound is a very interesting place telling the story of two sons trying to outshine each other by building houses. Apparently, they also had an influence on the history in Shanxi. As inside the complex no to very poor information is available, we decided to rent an audio guide for 20 yuan. It was much more interesting... More

Wang’s compound is a great example of Qing architecture (and some residual Ming architecture) going over the top. The original compound, built by the father, is sprawling with amazing views and sculptural details that are beautiful to see. The two newer sections, built by two of the brothers who wanted to strike out a bit on their own, are even... More

This huge compound is quite a way from Pingyao, but worth every mile. It is built on a hill side and there are more than 1000 rooms over several dozen courtyards, linked by paved alleys and even a bridge. It is even more interesting than the more popular Qiao compound. Ming guaranteed, as if you were there!

A good day-trip from Pingyao, reachable within an hour or so, the Wang Family Compound is effectively a village built for a single family and their relatives in the Qing Dynasty (18th Century). It contains at least 200 courtyards that range from the spartan to the palatial, with impressive architectural details in many. In true Chinese tourist-sight style, there is... More

We enjoyed the Wang compound during the extremely busy October holidays. It is a fascinating, beautiful, well built, and well preserved family compound. We rented the English audio tours for 20 rmb with a 40 rmb deposit for each set. The deposit is refunded at the end. These are often available at large sites and are always worth the price... More
