About
Since 2014, Stand Up 4 Elephants has been bringing a progressive and ethically responsible approach regarding improving the conditions of the captive elephants in Nepal. End of 2018, we started the construction of the SU4E HOME, a place built as a model of what is possible with minimal investment to manage elephants in a kinder way. Thanks to our long-term partners Le Pal Nature Foundation, Brabant Walloon, and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, we were able to welcome our first rescue Eva at the end of 2019 and Lhamo at the end of 2020. The SU4E HOME welcomes the caretakers of each rescued elephant, they are the key to the success. Happy mahouts = Happy elephants! The SU4E HOME is made up of a shelter for elephants open to an enclosure of about 1 hectare including a large elephant swimming pool. On the human side, the mahouts each have an individual room, a large common kitchen, and showers. The team welcomes visitors every day at 2pm.

I am a life long elephant lover. As such I wanted to of course be able to see these incredible animals during my visit to Chitwan, but I wanted to make sure I felt good about how I engaged with them and the life they were able to live. That is how I found SU4E! In my research I learned about their elephant happy hour of a couple years ago. So bummed that’s no longer an option as it would have been a dream! However, our visit to the sanctuary was also a most lovely way of learning more about one of my favorite animals and supporting an organization that is doing great work. These folks are dedicated to giving the two elephants in their care as normal of an elephant life as possible and they are working to change the treatment of elephants as a whole in the region through modeling what it can and should look like. We enjoyed an information session and the observation of care giving by the owners and their mahouts. Donate if you can!!!

An absolute must do while in Sauraha. You will come out with a better understanding, if not already aware, of the mistreatment and abuse elephants endure not only in Nepal but in surrounding countries. Amazing care by Floriane, Michael, the mahouts and team.

A brilliant organisation, providing great insight into the issues surrounding Elephant captivity in Nepal, and offering an example of what higher welfare could look like. Well worth a visit for anyone who wants to understand more about the topic whilst supporting a great cause. Thanks for having us!

My friend and I went to this welfare center for elephants and had such a great experience !
Floriane welcomes you in this amazing sanctuary with her team. She has a long experience as an animal keeper and veterinary assistant, which gives her explanations even more depth.
First, she gives many interesting information about elephants, their behaviour, their environnement, their funny facts, their link to the human population in Nepal, etc and you have of course time to ask questions !
Then, you go closer to Eva and Lhamo, two beautiful female captive elephants with interesting characters. You can see their training and snack time, observe their interactions, ask even more questions… trust me you will have many !
This experience felt really emotional for me, to see them so close, but respecting them at the same time. If there is one ethical place to meet elephants : it is there 🙏🏼

Thank you to the whole team for this exchange! A broth of knowledge and love for these two elephants, saved from a life of servitude and permanent work...no miserabilism or judgment here, just facts and clear and human explanations.
No contact with the elephants and a visit that is not too long so as not to disturb them and give them the retirement they deserve. They spend their day in the jungle and you can watch them as the team treats them when they return. They care for them not only physically but clearly also emotionally. These are elephants traumatized by severe mistreatment. Their needs and emotions are so taken into account. Well done. So much work and so much love. Hoping for a change in mentalities, this team is doing enormous work. Well done again and thank you ❤️

Incredible experience at SU4E during our stay at Chitwan. People taking care of Eva and Lhamo are awesome and promote value of respect and love for elephants. It was super insightful! I hope the association will grow and increase its impact!

These people truelly care about the elephants! I recommend everyone to come here, they give you a good and clear presentation about the elephants. After the presentation you can see how they feed the elephants and how they treat them. It was a great experience, thank you so much!

This was a really educational experience. The people who run it and take care of the elephants have such a love for them. They take care of them in the most humane way possible and you can really see how much the elephants love their human friends. This is not an experience that you can ride or touch the elephants, you can see them and watch their human friends take care of them. I hope to see more of this humane way of interacting with these beautiful creatures in Nepal.

Myself and my husband were lucky enough to be able to go to elephant happy hour. We walked with Rupa, a lovely 46 year old female elephant who was gentle and sweet natured. We watched her interact with her natural environment and have some much needed respite from work. Michael and Floriane were really knowledgable and answered so many questions from the group. If you have the chance to go to elephant happy hour I can not recommend it enough. It was a very positive experience, both for us as well as most importantly for Rupa our elephant! If you have respect for animals it really is the only choice for interacting with the elephants in chitwan.

We spent a lovely morning with the team at SU4E hanging out with Rupa, who we first fed cucumbers to, then she was left to do exactly as she pleased for an hour - scratching, getting wet, muddy and munching on bamboo from the nearby forest. It was an amazing experience to observe an elephant enjoying her free time and to learn more about the issues faced in Chitwan! Thanks Michael and Floriene for such a great day ☺️

Does anyone know when SU4E allow visitors/tourists? Only certain days of the week or every day?
Also, can anyone recommend an ethical hotel (i.e. no chained elephants on the property, etc.) that is nearby & reasonably priced?
Thanks!
