- Keith RPetersfield, United Kingdom14 contributionsImpressive - could spend more than a dayA very large monastery / museum complex. We took the e02 bus from Zuoying High speed train station (NT$70, avoid the taxi touts, and note that buses are less frequent on weekdays). We went to the 'museum' site first, through what seemed a rather incongruous up-market shopping mall. The big Buddha statue seemed more fitting and in place in real life than in pictures. The jade Buddha shrine had a deep stillness. We then had a buffet lunch by the entrance - NT$130 with a wide choice of veggie options. We then went to the Sutra Hall - we were the only ones there, and on to the main shrine in the monastery. I preferred this side of the complex : it seemed to be the working end of things. Returned to Kaohsiung on the three o'clock busHi, welcome to BMC. May good acts, good words, and good thoughts come to you everyday. - benjambmentDenton, Texas62 contributionsWear good shoes, because this isn't just one musuemNot sure what part of Fo Guang Shan this is supposed to be a review for, because there are numerous displays here. Seriously, bring water, possibly an umbrella, and wear good shoes. This place is pretty open to the various schools of Buddhist thought and has statues and displays to most of them, which, if you know anything about Buddhism, is pretty cool. It's some distance from the travel hubs in Kaohsiung / Zuoying. We took the subway to Daliao and then an Uber to Fo Guang Shan, because it was the best hybrid of short travel times and price (side note - if you buy a subway card in Taibei, you can use it here). If you're looking for a way to Kaohsiung, try to get the HSR (high speed rail) from Taibei or Taoyuan (depending on where you're starting from), not the normal train.Hi, welcome to BMC. - Janet1016Ottawa, Canada972 contributionsAbsolutely beautiful! While visiting Taiwan in January, my son, who lives in nearby Pingtung, brought my husband and I to the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Museum just outside of Kaohsiung. It is absolutely stunning and there is a lot to take in. If I could give any helpful tip, it would be to do your homework before you go, so you know what to look for and what to seek out, especially if you are an English speaker. Fo Guang Shan is an international Chinese Buddhist monastic order based in Taiwan. The headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, located in Dashu District, Kaohsiung, is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The organization is also one of the largest charity organizations in Taiwan. The grounds are immense and encompass more than thirty hectares. We were there right around the Chinese New Year Holiday. We visited the Jade Buddha, walked around the grounds and got right up close to the Giant Bronze Buddha statue which is 108 metres tall including the base and 50 metres tall all on its own. It's equivalent to the size of a 36 storey building. It is the tallest Bronze sitting Buddha statue in the world. It's a really cool place to visit and like I said above, study up a bit first so you are more familiar with Buddhism, the culture and beliefs and you'll get more out of it. There are shops inside, it's air-conditioned and there are food booths (vegetarian).Thank you for the wonderful feedback!Written 22 June 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2020Written 22 February 2020

This Buddhist ‘Disneyland’ takes a full day to explore. Various sections offer different insight into artefacts, traditions, displays and presentations. Staff are extremely welcoming and make the visit even more interesting. I had an amazing day out! Make sure you visit this location as it’s worth it!

This is one of the most overwhelming religious sites I have ever visited in terms of scale and it’s an amazing experience to wander round. I don’t even think I saw half of it as I needed to get back to Kaohsiung and there was loads of other stuff in the museum itself so give yourself hours to see it all. The golden Buddha statue, the pyramid in which it rests, the interior shrines, the surrounding stupas and the the nearby towers are all truly magnificent. Really friendly guides around too, all keen to introduce and explain.

Amazing place, tranquillity and peaceful. All the volunteers explained everything to us in English. The tea was offered when watching a video. Lovely place. Definitely a must visit place.

Cool place. It's a pretty large site. Giant Buddha not too far from the city via bus or taxi, on a river in the hills. Up to 1hr travel time one way then walk around for an hour or two. Same group that owns the temple in LA I guess.

Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum (Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum) For short, a Buddhist architecture building in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan. This is an international museum, also has the function of exhibition and promotion.[1] In September 2016 Buddha Quan "Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center" was changed to "Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum"
Buddha Da Memorial Quan was built for 9 years, inaugurated for sightseeing since 2011. Since 2014 this place has been honored to be honored for three consecutive years in 2014.

I highly recommend visiting if you have the time to go outside Kaohsiung. Taking an Uber was only half and hour and cost approximately 900NTD each way. Much faster than the bus.
The main entrance building was a little commercial with a Starbucks, a hotel, vegetarian restaurant and buffet, and some fast food.
Next was the long walk towards the museum. Instead of walking down the center I suggest veering to the pagodas on the right side. Inside each were different themes (calligraphy, founding of Fo Guang Shan, etc). The ones on the left side were administrative offices, dedicated to weddings, etc. as you get closer to the museum there were alternating panels of Buddha sayings or a snapshot of a key life event. It was cooler walking here as the walkway was covered.
Access to the golden Buddha, all 36 stories tall, was on the third floor above the museum. I did the circumambulation to all four stupas and learned a little about each. Well worth it. Right underneath the Buddha was a room dedicated to Calligraphy. Only accessible if you want to and are able to write Chinese words.
The first floor of the museum was the most educational. The second and third floor rooms were closed. The first floor rooms were dedicated to:
Buddhist festivals
History of Fo Guang Shan
Life of Buddha including a 4D movie that ran every half an hour.
Underground shrines and relics. I learned that they will open one of 48 underground palaces every 100 years. The next one will be in 88 years from now (maybe my grandchildren will come back)!
Jade Buddha Shrine where the tooth relic was stored. No photos allowed plus you must remove your shoes.
Golden Buddha Shrine
Avalokitesvara Shrine (Thailand)
Everyone I met was very friendly and did their best to explain things in English.
Plan to spend a couple hours here as a minimum.

Majestic building and a very beautiful place to view displays and exhibits related to Buddha. Even for non buddhists like us, the place was nice to visit and informative. The whole Fo Guang Shan area would require almost a day to visit and walk around. Even the grounds are beautiful.

HI, I will be travelling here on March 3, 2020, I'm afraid that day was Tuesday. I wonder if they are open that day? Will that day still part of the Chinese new year or maybe spring festival?

Given the news on the current virus, I recommend you check their web site closer to your travel date to ensure they are open. The virus is not a problem in Taiwan at the moment but it’d be wise to get an update in a few weeks.

Hi, the Buddha Museum closed on Tuesday, because many museums and playgrounds in Taiwan are closed on Mondays. Therefore, we decided to close on Tuesday so that there are more places to visit in Taiwan. Buddha Museum is a sacred site and perfect museum for everyone. You are very welcome to visit here again!
