The Temple is very beautifully and colorfully decorated. I liked the statues/ornaments at the gates a lot. There were also a lot of very beautiful and interesting ornaments and statues inside Unfortunately I don't understand Mandarin and although there were a lot of brochures, I could only find very little information in English. The information I found mainly covered the history of the creation of the Temple.
The Temple seemed to be used quiet actively by worshipers, but during my visit (end of July around 1p.m.) there were only few people there. But at that time of the day in that high summer season, there are very few people outside in Taitung. That said, the temple was nicely air conditioned ad neither to hot nor to cold.

Temples are a dime a dozen, but this one stood out to me. Nice to have a wonder around and reflect on the day

One stop shopping for the religious icons. This place is beautiful and huge. Really colorful. Lots of incense too.

If you had to go to 1 temple I think this is the one to get LOTS of pics and see lots of culture and history and no tourists around to bother you. First Taitung is not exactly a place where tourists hit up unless you're some granola who likes to adventure. IT's a pretty sleepy town with a lot of small fishing village charm and slight backwardness. that saying, their rice here is famous due to some volcanic ash waters and the food here is cheap and pretty local.
This temple is red. You go inside and it is grand and majestic. There is one place off to the side with hundreds of red lanterns when you peer in. Definiltely felt like some movie you were in.
Don't have to worry about modesty if you're wondering about that but certainly don't come in baring your midriff and showing your butt cheeks even though it's hot and humid outside.
No tour guides so you get to go it your own and no one's gonna beg you for money. Taitung isn't a city for many beggars. seems like they all crowd around the temples in bigger cities like Taichung and Taipei.

The temple complex is fairly large considering it sits in the center of the city. The craftsmanship is quite beautiful, but this temple is not old - the granite columns (in my opinion) cheapen the look of the temple and don't even seem to match the rest of the structure - it's like they took an old roof (with incredible images) and stuck it on a 1995-constructed building. Also, the fact that people were coming in to pray and they were smoking as well - seemed disrespectful to me.

This was our first trip to Taiwan/China, so please take into account this, but for us this was the best temple in Taiwan, visiting quite a few in Taipei, Tainan, and in the countryside.
It looks like under development extension, but already has quite a few rooms, with different very beautiful decoration, ornaments.
If you visit Taitung City you should not miss it.

Some of the pictures here appear to be of the same temple (not just similar) listed as Beiji Temple in Taitung City on TripAdvisor. I can't find any info indicating that Beiji and Tianhou are synonymous, and Wikipedia gives them separate entries. Also, Wikipedia lists both Tianhou Temple and Beiji Temple as being in the city of Tainan, in southwest Taiwan. So, do the pictures here refer to Beiji Temple or Tianhou Temple? And is the correct location Guanshan, Taitung City, or Tainan? Or none of the above? Thanks.
