It's near Taitung Station, so I stopped by. The first line between Hualien and Taitung was opened in 1926. However, the track width was different between the western line and the eastern line, so the existing site is a valuable place where you can see what the track width was like at the time.

- Located within the art village, there is a actual retired train for tourists to take photo with. You can climb up the train and cannot enter the train's interior.
- There is a souvenir shop with aircon where you can buy cold drinks and local brand items.

This part of the city used to be bland and boring, the type of place you would just pass through in order to go someplace else. They have turned it into a marvelous place to stroll, listen to live music, get a drink or small snack, and buy local and crafts. It includes a structure that has restaurants and little art shops made from old shipping containers, and it looks amazing. This is a reason to stop in Taitung for at least one evening. It is more active on weekends.

There was nothing there.....guided here by the positive reviews we set off and found nothing! The buildings were padlocked shut, with one open and some people working on a float. We checked the time online and it said they would be open. Confused....

The art village is open and airy. Lots of great little restaurants and small art displays. We didn't see an actual exhibit, just a lot of public art.

Not a whole lot here, but we had a relaxing walk around the area, and particularly enjoyed the one-of-a-kind paper lanterns created by children. I'm uploading a few pictures.

Looking at the other reviews I guess that it depends very much when you come there and which artists are performing. I was there on a Friday evening and I liked it, because there was some very beautiful guitar music and a funny clown-like person entertaining the kids. There is some food and some stalls with handcraft stuff and some shops in the containers too. It was nice and I believe quiet a good place to go with kids on an evening. Go after dark for the nice lights.

On the Friday we were here, this area was alive in the early evening. Most of the cafes opened around 5 so if you don't want to end up in Starbucks, go then (and don't leave it too late). There were lots of cute stalls with handicrafts and pretty lanterns strung up. We really enjoyed the live music mix on the night we went. It started with a solo violinist playing a very beautiful rendition of Pachelbel's Canon and ended with a dynamic local band (Taitung Sunset?) strutting its stuff on the stage. We stayed at the nearby Taitung Railway Inn - a brilliant find. Big, clean rooms, lovely, warm staff, thoughtful decor. A little oasis of calm on a busy main strip. Very safe and super convenient. We would definitely stay here again.
