Overall, this was a wonderful experience! The view from the ridge and all along at least one 3rd to half the hike are fantastic.
However it is very fatiguing and there is a segment where you actually need to climb rock with hands and feet,...More
This is a very nice hike, with magnificent points of view on the lake underneath and mountains around it. But it's far from being an easy or medium hike, we've been doing a lot of hiking with my wife before going there as we saw...More
This was a beautiful hike, but I suggest the following since the scrabble part of the hike could prove to be dangerous. Take the boat to the end of the trail early in the morning. Hike up to the part where you are climbing, not...More
Don't underestimate this hike but it's brilliant. We took the boat in the morning tand hiked back to the parking. The part until the ridge is definitely the best and most entertaining with different landscapes and I he beautiful lakes. The ridge seems a bit...More
My son (13) and I started our six night camping trip over Jotunheimen in Gjendesheim. From Oslo we took the Norway Express at around 8:30 AM and started the hike Gjendesheim-Memurubu right around 14: 30 the same day, we had heavy backpacks and send them...More
We hiked this in early July. We wanted to be free from the ferry schedule so we intended to start from Gjendesheim, hike to the high point (1743 m, which is 748m or about 2450 ft of vertical climb from the start), enjoy the views,...More
Have lived in norway for about 10 years decided to take weekend tour to besseggen with 2 friends. We stayed overnight in a camp at maurvangen and started 09:30 with a boat to memurubu and started walking around 10:00 am. First steep we were very...More
Besseggen - along with Prekestolen and Trolltunga - is extremely popular and can get crowded at times. Still, it's a spectacular hike and you should not let the crowds stop you. It's popular for a reason. It's also hard, so be prepared to hike for...More

You have two options. Either wait in line in the morning for the boat to Memurubu and walk back to Gjendesheim. This option gives you more freedom as you're not dependent on a boat that only leaves two or three times per day.
If you walk from Gjendeheim you should should assess your fitness and calculate good time so you're sure you'll get to Memurubu in time for the return boat. I was there last weekend and it took us 10 hours (which is very long, but I walked with to people who were scared of heights). I've done it previously in a bit more than 5 hours. The record is about 1 hour and 15 minutes, so it all depends on your fitness!
