Worth the drive before sunrise. (Door trail on the east side of the badlands). Don't miss the sky views with clouds circling above and behind the direct sunrise.

The geography of this area was amazing and unbelievable. It's hard to accept the fact that melting ice could create this beauty. The heavenly architects must have worked overtime to design these sights. Well worth the visit!!

We didn't hike the entire castle trail, instead we started on the medicine root trail and looped back to our car on the castle trail. The landscape is stunning. Just when you think you're at the bottom of the badlands, the earth opens to display the beautiful white river valley. This trail is easy, no climbing.

This trail is accessible from the loop road in Badlands. It is a relatively short trail that provides beautiful views on all side. You overlook a canyon that would remind you of Bryce canyon in Utah (but less colorful). Allow one hour for this trail.

We started from the Door/Window Trail parking lot and took the Castle Trail to the point at which it intersects the Saddle Pass Trail, we then took the Medicine Root Trail (and start of the Castle Trail) back to the parking lot to form a loop. The scenery in the Badlands is amazing - 5 out 5 stars. We were... More

Castle trail was my favorite trail we got to experience during our trip to the badlands. The kids loved being able to walk ahead since the area was relatively flat. We did enjoy walking up a few of the mounds to get views of the area. Beautiful landscape.

This is the best trail in the park!! Hiking the Castle Trail gives you access to the quiet rhythm of the park. You pass through a variety of environments, sometimes walking through tall grass and sometimes jumping over small gullies. You'll get up close and personal with badlands formations. You might even encounter mule deer or bighorn sheep if you're... More

We started our hike at saddle pass, continued on the Medicine Root trail, then finished on Castle Trail. The portion we did of the Castle Trail is about half when combined with the other 2 trails. The trail is over 5 miles from end to end (10 miles total). Not too much elevation. but bring plenty of water.

If you love the outdoors, give yourself several days to explore this and the other trails of the Badlands to experience a mosaic of landscapes, fascinating formations, beautiful play of light, and great birding. As always the National Park Service has passionate naturalists, who are there to guide and make great suggestions. A unique place all in all!
