A nice shorter excursion in Grand Canyon of the Gunnison National Park down to the Gunnison River. It has twists and turns both ways so you need to use your lower gears to save wear and tear on the vehicle. Watch the NPS video in the visitors’ center before you go since they talk about an important tunnel irrigation project... More

It is a 16% grade and lots of curves but well worth the drive to the bottom. This wasn't here the last time we were here so had to do it and very glad we did

After traveling the North RIm, we came back around to the South Rim to do East Portal Road, ( and to get my passport stamp). This road leads to the river and is a great view looking up at the age old rocks. This view represents the character of the stones you were looking down on. The beavers and otters... More

A super steep (16% grade) 6 mile road leading down into the canyon. Terrific at the bottom. Amazing views along the drive, and then great views from the base. Water and surroundings are stunning. A campground is also available here.

We had half a day to spend in Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP and started our day doing the East Portal Road. If we had it to do over again we'd skip this drive in favor of spending more time "topside" on the canyon. The drive itself was fine but the views at the bottom were a bit disappointing.... More

We wanted a more up close and personal experience of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison national Park. This drive down got us closest to the river. We'd already done the south rim and this was just an additional 30 minutes down and back. Since you are already there, you should tech this onto your trip.

We love to take the road less traveled. This was an interesting drive, and we saw deer along the way. You get down to the river by taking this road, and there is a nice picnic area at the bottom. You also get to see where they dug the tunnel through the canyon walls to divert some water for irrigation... More

Steep drive (16%) to the bottom of the canyon. Several tents pitched at the campground. A place to get up close with the cold water. We enjoyed the drive, but our new car got very hot driving back out. Nothing over 22’ allowed on this road.

The road down to the dam area is very scenic. As others stated, it is steep (16% gradient) but the road is paved and well maintained. Once down to the bottom, there are places to picnic with tables and restrooms.

The signs at the top warn of the steep grade and curves, but the road is paved and maintained, and it's not a difficult drive. Use lower gears and don't ride your brakes. It's a great windy road, and the views as you drive are pretty nice. Once down we walked along the river's edge and took photos, and I... More
