We planned to do Elephant Hill. It is accessible via a 3-mile unpaved road (2-wheel drive okay). The signage at the beginning of the unpaved road scared us off. Basically, it says the road is windy, filled with blind curves, slippery areas, etc. We are...More

There are so many photogenic places at Canyonlands, and this one certainly is one of the top ones. But it's a bit of a challenge to get there as the 3-mile road is narrow, curvy and often blind.

We walked in the late afternoon, which seemed perfect given the light. You only need to walk 30 minutes from the carpark to see some of the best views in Needles. The climb is initially a bit steep but then is easy. Bring your camera!

Camped back at Horsehoof campsite in Needles which required the traversing of Elephant Hill, Narrow Pass, and SOB Hill. All are quite technical and man are you glad when you get passed them. However, once overcoming these obstacles, you are afforded the most beautiful sights!...More

Elephant Hill is at the end of a very narrow 3.0 mile (4.8k) dirt road in the Needles District starting near Squaw Flat that is passable with an ordinary passenger car with care. Elephant Point is the beginning of the very difficult, technical 4x4 track...More

Often overlooked or passed by on the way to the Chesler Trailhead at the end of Elephant Hill road, this formation is a beautiful example of sandstone mesa/butte.

Elephant Hill is an area of geologic interest in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. Large red boulders of Cedar Mesa sandstone that are streaked and capped with white sediment dominate the landscape. The area is popular for the unusual scenery and outdoor recreation...More

Elephant Hill has its starting access at the end of the dirt road and is the launching point for serious hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, and four wheel vehicles heading into the Needles. While a 3.0 mile RT hike will get you to the serious section...More

I had been in this area of Utah for a while before I saw Elephant Hill but the novelty of the landscape had not worn off and I enjoyed seeing Elephant Hill. The drive out there is marked as 2WD unpaved and we negotiated it...More

We spent an afternoon in the Needles section of Canyonlands and hiked part of the Elephant Hill trail, but didn't have enough time to take it as far as I'd like to have. There's a short uphill section at the start that might intimidate some,...More
