This is a short hike up an unusually smooth huge rock shaped like a whale with a knobble on the top which you can scramble up for an excellent view. Not worth going past the highest point, just turn around and come back

Easily access from the road if you want to visit it but just as good to look at from the pull in. One more great rock formation in Utah's set.

My wife and I hiked this trail on a Friday in early October 2016 on a swing through the big 5 Utah national parks. We had just finished a moderate hike and wanted something a bit easier to give us time to recover. This hike fit the bill perfectly. You climb up a bit of slickrock along the way, but... More

Very accessible hike for families with wonderful views. It seems that you hike the back of a whale for sure!

of course you must hike to the top, it is a very long way to the easy trail walking up along the spine of the whale, but my family chose the difficult route up the side. we visited in mid September 2014 and the weather was perfect for hiking.

Whale Rock is a nice little spot to continue to see the amazing geological formations of Canyonlands NP. Take your time and enjoy the views around this pullout and trail.

All along this trip, all I have done is use my imagination to put every living thing on a mountain with its forms and shapes. This one is called a Whale rock but to me, it looks like a big hoagie or French bread. But oh well? Be careful if you climb to the top, it is often windy. Climb... More

It was quite windy when we were here, but it was still super fun to hike up to the summit of this strange slickrock dome sitting on top of a mesa.

This was really cool! My daughter saw people on the whales back and wanted to go, so we did. We weren't planning on doing this hike, but we're glad we did. It looks hard when you're starting out, but it wasn't bad at all, and the view from the top is stunning. It was the highlight of my daughters day!
