We stayed in a cabin on Lake McDonald. Had coffee by the lake every morning and a glass of wine every evening watching the sunset colors strike the mountains.

We visited in May 2017. Still a bit of snow on the ground. I fell in love with the scenery, the temperature, the fresh clean scent of the outdoors, and most importantly the stones. It was an amazing adventure. The Going to the Sun Road...More

Have seen this lake on several Facebook lists of must-see places to visit. Finally had the time to visit en route to Calgary on a geocaching loop trip. This lake did not disappoint! Loved the views and all the rainbow rocks!!! Would suggest coming May-October,...More

The Lake was like glass and no crowds if you travel the first weeks of May. No boating of any kind allowed this year, due to invasive mussels. But this made it more peaceful. The shore at the west end is the best. Smooth small...More

5/10/2017; The Sun Road was closed due to snow, but the drive along the lake was beautiful. The stones/pebbles are beautiful (see picture). We did hike the trail north of Fish Camp and we took bear spray as they were out.

We got to GNP before the season so the entire Going to the Sun road was closed except for the 10 miles on the east bank of Lake MacDonald. It was worth it. Beautiful. many turnouts. Gorgeous views of the mountains to the west of...More

Lake McDonald is spectacular in most any weather. Crystal clear and cold. The first 8 miles of the Going to the Sun road parallel the lake giving you views most of the way to Lake McDonald lodge. The Fish Creek nature trail will provide vista...More

We spent 2 - half days in the park walking and hiking in the Lake McDonald area. We were there before the season started so a lot of the roads, shops and restaurants were not open. The Going-to-the-Sun Road was open to vehicles to Lake...More

Glacier Park Boat Company has cruises on Lake McDonald that, according to their website, start this year sometime around May 20, 2017. Go to the National Park Service website for Glacier Park. Using the dropdown navigation... More

Anywhere on on the coast line.

I have two boys (10 and 12) with 6' Youth Kayaks that we've used on smaller, calm lakes in the past. Is Lake McDonald calm enough for them to use along the shoreline with life jackets, supervision, etc.? I know it can get rough, but from what I have read online it looks like it would be fine in calm conditions. We are also staying a few nights in East Glacier. Are Swift Current and St. Mary OK for them as well? Apologies if this is a duplicate post, but I didn't see anything specific to kids using small Kayak-ish vessels. Thanks!
