for a visual smorgasbord of what the teton range has to offer, consider the long way to lake solitude - we started up paintbrush canyon, snacked at holly lake, and then crossed paintbrush divide, where we ate lunch and gobbled up the views as well. a steep descent brings one down to this very pretty lake, but you won't have... My son and I went on this hike along with our German exchange friend. We took the early boatride over on Jenny Lake and then started hiking. The trail was well marked and there weren't too many people until later in the day. We enjoyed the spectacular scenery including deer, birds, and many beautiful sights. At the lake, we took... More

That trip was one of the highlights of my Trails West tour. The hike was about 10 miles or so in, and same amount out. The hike was early in July and there was still plenty of snow around the lake. Thehike alternated between steep and flat. We saw plenty of moose but little other wildlife. Scenery was breathtaking. I... More

Very long walk to get to the lake. Would recommend talking boat to other end of Jenny lake to get to start of trail. Bring lunch and start early. We did not see wildlife but you get amazing views of the mountains. Around the last two miles it was deep snow up hill in late June. Prepare to slip and... More

We started out early on our 18 mile round trip to Lake Solitude! The hike through Cascade Canyon was pretty easy and we saw a huge moose along the way. After the turn to go up to Lake Solitude, it got much harder because if the rubble field of rocks. It was so awesome when we got to the lake... More

This is a beautiful hike to a wonderful lake. Remember, however, that the vertical rise is very high so beginner and intermediate hikers….pass on this one.

The hike to Lake Solitude IS long...make no mistake. It's about 7 miles out and then another 7 miles back. But the reward is seeing Lake Solitude. It's stunning. It is crystal clear with beautiful mini-glaciers there year round. If you do enjoy long hikes with some climbing, pack a lunch that you can enjoy once you get to the... More

For starters, we're not uber-hikers. We're in pretty reasonable shape and have been relatively-easily complete other elevation hikes before (both in high elevations and when the elevations rise over 1000 feet). We started at 8:15 and finished at 4:15, with the additional mileage from the String Lake trailhead. That said, the last two miles of this hike were pretty rigorous,... More

Not for the average, nonchalant hiker!!! 15 miles round trip is NO JOKE people! Read the signs. Steep inclines, slippery, loose, sharp rock most of the way. Beautiful waterfall views. Lake at the top is the prettiest I've ever seen. I'd say at least 75% of the hike is in the sun. Start EARLY!! Like 7-8am. Starting midday is just... More
