We came here for sunset, and we were amazed at how beautiful the view is from the top of the observation tower. The hike from the parking lot to the observation tower is a bit of a trek, not too long, but pretty much gaining...More

We were able to visit 4th of July week and make it to the top. The hike was tough for us since we are not in the best of shape. The hike was on a steep incline basically the entire way up. Had to stop...More

We hiked this in the last day before it was to close for repairs (July 10) so definitely check if it is open before heading all the way up there as I’m not sure how long. We lucked out by getting there around 11 and...More

A quick FYI for every one that was planning on visiting this month. The Clingman's Dome observation deck will be closed for repairs from July 10, 2018 till July 27, 2018. From what I've read, there are issues with the supports, however, the parking lot...More

very cool - top of the hill - place! worth the drive up - then 1/2 mile straight up hill to Clingman's Dome - closed until end of July - but you can still visit - just not the tower. Then hike to your hearts...More

The drive up to the parking lot was really nice with beautiful views along the way. The hike is short but uphill, nothing too challenging for our family of five. Really cool being able to look off in the distance and see "smoky" clouds that...More

This is a mile hike up a pretty steep grade on a nice, wide, paved trail with a spiral sidewalk climb up to the top of the observation tower. It was borderline cold, rainy and clouds were moving in and out but we got some...More

Worth the hike as many have said, we took a trip here through the smoky mountains and wow was it worth it. From the changing scenery of the mountain trail to the thirst quenching hike to the dome. We actually went from snow to glorious...More

The views were phenomenal! Although it is a paved path, the hike to the observation tower was strenuous. Visitors of all ages and athletic types (including us) stopped for breaks several times. However, it was all worth it. Beware: parking may take lots of patience...More

The view would be great if it was not on a raining day. We climed up and it was an easy climb. It just rained that day so we couldn't say much, but the air was very fresh.

About an hour and a half. Time to park, then time to walk up the incline and and back down. Add time if you plan on hiking the trails.

Clingmans Dome is the name of the mountain. The road to the Clingmans Dome parking area is a bit curvy and there are some drop offs. I would think your husband's problem would be that road more than the .5 mile paved hike... More
